I always wanted to play but it seems like it would be really hard to get into  now.

The difficulty is finding a group of friends who all simultaneously happen to have the hours of free time necessary to play it.

But there are so many rules and backstories. :(

The rules are really rather simple, especially since you don't need to follow them all.  Same with backstories.   What you need is somebody to run the game who is good at telling stories.

Languish should have a teach Korea how to play D&D themed meet up. :)

What Neil said. The rules aren't the important part, they can be made very simple.

What is important is having a good DM who can as it were bring the story to life.

I pride myself that I was pretty good at that. Plus I was rutheless. One of the banes of D&D was DMs who were basically monty hall - too chickenshit to ever actually kill off players; so there was no tension and the games got boring. In my games, if you were stupid, you got killed off.  :menace:

I'll GM; would you like a +2 sword?
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

You should hold out for a curling broom +2 Korea.

Would it be possible to play D&D on the forum?

You can. Me and my friends set up one of those freebie forums and played Paranoia on it.

Games usually fell apart fairly quick, due to real life issues.

How does a gelatinous cube drop loot when killed? WHY ARE THERE NO PRIZES IN MY JELLO?

Gelatinous cubes drop some of the most dangerous loot in the game, at least in AD&D 2nd edition, the +5 ICBM.  There is a percentile roll to see if the weapon detonates and then how long it takes to go to detonate.  This led to a typical crisis in the game known amongst AD&D fans as the "Cube and Missile Crisis".

Brilliant!

Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.
