Also, we sure spend a lot of money on "survivability."  Remember when the best fighter plane on Earth cost about as much as maybe ten regular cars?>

That would be, "never"?

OK, fifty or sixty regular cars (P-51 unit cost $51,000 [not typo], 1940 Ford coupe [apparently "coupay," according to Gatsby and Bonnie and Clyde] about $1000).  You take my damned point.

Are you counting coupe?

10 and 50 are significantly different multiples.  Plus, that is cherry-picking numbers from a period of rapid technological development in the platform:

P-40 (1941): $24,000 (nearly doubled to $44,000 just three years later)
P-51 (1945): $51,000
F-86E (1953): $220,000
F-100D (1957): $697,000

The didn't look too bad, a bit like a 50s british 2-door sports car as compared to the bus proportions of their successor the Thunderchief.  :)

Certainly uglier fighters/FBs of the time like the British Lightning:

but also more aesthetically pleasing ones like the Hunter:

How can you possibly put that ugly ass Lightning with a Hunter. You should be ashamed.

I'm sure if I worked on it, I could come up with an amputee joke about a Naval Air Arm without any.

One goofy Gulf state air force was still flying Hunters in S&T's Oil War.  2-1 space filler.

CountDeMoney

Wiki says they're still active with the Lebanese AF.  That must be a hell of a lot of parking tickets.

Ed Anger

Holy crap, an Oil War reference.

Just don't imagine the LAF getting a whole lot of flight hours.
