The Brain

Quote from: Tyr on June 23, 2013, 10:10:02 PM

I had an application going with a crappy company but they were asking for way too much and I really really don't want to have to work for them anyway, so I emailed them last week and said I was withdrawing my application.
Today I get an email saying after long and careful consideration they've decided to reject me.
You can't reject me, I rejected you!

As I keep telling people: at least you got a rejection e-mail.

Makes me appreciate the political discourse on Languish. At least a little bit.

Has Bill Clinton made any significant improvements or projects in his home state of Arkansas since leaving the Presidency?

Maybe it's because it's Arkansas, or the lighting, but the architectural design kinda makes that look like a lavishly grandiose trailer home propped on cinder blocks.

It's the only way to get people in Arkansas to go to a library, make it look like home.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I wrote my first sonnet in awhile. I think it is bad, and really wanted to give the subject justice.

QuoteRespectable society
cleaves with careful cultivation
an ad-hoc burgeoise propriety
raising each to separate station

Inequality extends itself
And justifies the yawning breach
the advantages that spring from wealth
ordain aristocrats beyond our reach

Their easy elegance I envy-
It is the affectation I resent
beyond their wealth and stable plenty
the composed refinement and content

No parvenu could even once impugn
the apotheosis of the silver spoon

The center of what was eating at me bordered on ide-socialist propaganda; civic morality and propriety (what "is and isn't done", rather than the more obvious issues of good and evil,) seem very much in the hands of the upper-middle class, which I envision as more successfully restraining itself, producing humans that deny what is base and low about humanity with greater success, producing on occasion humans that seem so effortlessly composed and valuable.

Beyond the obvious accumulation of wealth, I wanted to explore the idea that the children of it, who go to finishing schools and receive proper upbringing, are themselves living treasures of cultivation, beauty and learning. I failed in communicating that here, and it might also strike some of you as an out-of-date idea.  But it gives me no peace- I can't help but think of how clumsy I am, intimately aware of my own hygiene defects and stumbling imprecision. When I compare it to my father, and the strides his progeny made in basic civil decency compared to him, I feel a sort of despair based on inequality of origin. He was definitely a far brighter, more driven, capable and all-around better man than I will ever become, but he was viciously hemmed in by his experiences.

The socialization we receive as we enter into society produces disheveled malcontents as assuredly as it produces princesses in towers.
It can't be helped...We'll have to use 'that'
