Was listening to a Fibber McGee and Molly from 1941 where McGee gets his draft notice and dutifully intends to go into the Army despite being like 50.  Yuk yuk the joke of course is that Fibber is late to join up because the draft notice was actually sent in 1918.  The upshot is he briefly considers going down to the training camp and jumping the fence, but Molly wisely counsels that he'd never get past the guards, and McGee agrees, noting "At least we live in a country where the guards are there to keep you out of the camp!"
