It is the paradise of Central America. How or why they are awesome when their neighborhood sucks shit is kind of mysterious.

They achieved political stability with this one neat trick: they disbanded their military in 1948 after it kept taking over the government in the first half of the 20th century. And things have been great there ever since.

Sure. But it isn't like the military of other Central American states really provides that much security. Which is precisely why Costa Rica figured it was more of a danger to Costa Rica than it was to any invading force.

I've started putting a bunch of cayenne pepper on and around seeds I plant, and on the bird feeder seeds. It seems to have worked to keep the squirrels away.
