I really want a dog. But darn it's hard to get one. Shelters are so over subscribed and that's before we get to the inspections and such. I've known people be turned down for the stupidest reasons.
Great for the dogs of course.
But I don't want to have to deal with a breeder <_<

Inspections?

They don't just give out dogs to anyone who rocks up. They want to check out your house and make sure its a fitting place for the dog.
I've heard from folks who have gone through it that they can be quite strict. As mentioned one guy I know was turned down for having a guinea pig (safely in a cage way out of reach of any dog), another because there'd be 5 hours where the dog would be alone during the day.

At one hand this seems like a good idea as keeping a dog in a cramped home is cruel enough even under ideal circumstances.

On the other hand, if some random shelter employees wanted to come around and judge me and my home I would be quite irritated.

Are you sure that keeping a dog in a cramped home is more cruel than keeping a dog in a cage at a shelter? I'd argue not.

Of course a shelter is worse. Unless your home has a Guinea pig apparently, in which case self-appointed experts decide the cage will be better.

It seems though that the shelters have so many people looking for dogs that they can afford to be very picky.

The choice isn't between staying in the shelter and going to a cramped home (or one with a Guinea pig 😉), because if they turn down the cramped home/guinea pig option, a new person looking for a dog is bound to show up.

The Guinea pig guy was 2 years back. I don't think they were so over subscribed then as now. Just unjustly picky.

Sounds like the spay/neuter campaign is working too well.

Had to Google that.

I have you know my family have kept dogs as de facto family members. Being a village home of course it means they are not just pets and child-substitutes but have an actual practical role to play as guards of the property

In fact, we just very recently saw a practical example of that. The family dog just passed away a month ago. Couple of weeks after, the family of swallows happily living next to my parents' balcony got their nest destroyed and young eaten by a mart (or something similar). Clearly the bloody bastard could not get around in our yard while there was a dog but now could feel safe to do so.

Anyways my point is that in a rural environment there's an actual practical utility to having dogs which means that you can't really be as restrictive about them as the guinea pig case, and that in turn means that cruel bastards will also end up with dogs.

My dog scared off a group of burglars once. That night he earned all the treats he can eat for his whole blessed life.

 I am sure 99% of dogs are well looked after.

It's a great film though, if a tad heavy handed.

I wonder if Tyr's complaint is related to all the emails I see from the bigger bases down south warning about rises in dog thefts. :hmm:

Yeah that was 2019 I was at that game. Roger regularly would come and pitch in the alumni vs varsity game year after year during his career. Having a guy like that show up and play for free was really great. I will never forget him doing that for us. So, from a UT Longhorn perspective he is a pretty great guy. His kids were pretty awesome position players despite them blowing their dad's double play there.

I understand Major League Fans don't love him quite as much as we do :P
