Pretty cheap for upmarket

Yeah, it's quite affordable to go out for dinner, and no comparison to, say, London.

Here's an example menu for a mildly upscale restaurant on Ringstraße, where you can have a quite good Schnitzel away from the usually recommended places (Figlmüller, Plachutta): https://meisslundschadn.at/Content/uploads/2018/04/ms_KW-16_E.pdf

Figlmüller is a tourist trap. Cannot recommend.

Figlmüller (both Bäckerstraße and Wollzeile) are very touristy, but I don't think their Schnitzel is particularly bad (overpriced, maybe). The best Schnitzel were at Zu den Zwei Lieserln and Zum Lustigen Radler, but both have been closed for years. :(

Meissl und Schadn is fine, but it's mostly because you can select your fat (clarified butter, lard, or vegetable oil). Their Salzburger Nockerln are awesome - but if you're unlucky you may have to wait extra long like us recently; our first order collapsed in on itself, so they had to start over.

Here's a good primer of where to go for Schnitzel in Wien: https://kurier.at/genuss/restaurants-hier-gibt-es-die-besten-schnitzel-in-wien/225.105.625

Blauensteiner is a few steps from my home and it has good Viennese home cooking.

Not even London, over here (Spain, to be clear) fancy schmancy restaurants, the kind that appear in these lists (which have been booming in the last few years, in what I suspect is some kind of bubble), can easily reach the 100 € threshold for a set menu, and often more. In that league, 40€ for a main course is not *that* much.

Set menus at places like Disfrutar or El Celler de Can Roca start at €150, drinks included. There's some more affordable ones - Tickets is also in the Best Of list and you can have dinner there for half that or less.

That said, you actually get served a lot of food, not the "get charged a lot for an olive in a fancy platter" cliché. Servings are indeed on the small side, but there's usually a lot of dishes in the menu.

Former 1st place Noma isn't representing us anymore. :( Not that I have a vested interest in that place as I'll never pay for the €300 menu (wine is €180 extra). :bleeding:

Given that it only re-opened this year (and in a new location to boot), I'm not sure that should come as a surprise.

Around here, debit cards have fees for the customers, credit cards do not.

What fee do you pay for your debit card?  It is no cost to me.

 using interact has fees.

Edit : I looked it up. Apparently most of the banks have gave up their fees back in 2017. I didn't know. It was 1$/transaction last time I checked.

Steirereck Seven Course menu with drinks is 170, I think. Not shockingly expensive, but I could easily go out 7 nights a week for dinner/drink for that.

EDIT: 165 without drinks, add 89 for wines.

I only know as I went to Restaurant 108 and it was the only Noma affiliated restaurant that was open.

The office drones across the street from ours like fresh air. It's pretty common that they have the windows wide open all day. Even today, with 1°C, all windows across two floors (4 offices total) - all windows open.

Service is extremely arrogant and condescending. And their Schnitzel is pork, not deal.

I was at Huth and had a really great Schnitzel and great service.

I thought it was decent (and they do have veal), but you definitely don't go there for a relaxed, drawn out meal.
