They seem kinda lost at the moment, strategy-wise. It's obvious they plan to use the trial to drive up their base and try to win next year's local elections (winning Barcelona for example, would be a coup for them), or even call a snap regional election, trying to increase their slim majority and get a stronger mandate (47% of the vote doesn't really cut it). And then... dunno, something? Can't see them doing another UDI given how well the previous one worked out.

But yeah, they talk the talk but don't walk the walk. The regional president gave a speech last week where he said he wouldn't accept a guilty verdict. He was later questioned whether that meant he would free the incarcerated Catalan government (they are awaiting trial in Catalan prisons, which are run by the regional government), and he answered that he "can't do that" and that the answer would be "political".

I think they live in a fantasy scenario where the EU or the UN are going to eventually force Spain to hold an independence referendum. The regional president brings up "remedial secession" all the time, like this was the Balkans in the 1990s.

The current Spanish government has offered talks to expand autonomy, but separatists have rebuked them if self-determination isn't on the table.

Who was the Catalan government representative that, when called upon justifying why they don't do what they announce they'll do said something about that being a "political way of speaking"? They basically admitted that they'll bark all day long but, at the end of the day, won't really do anything controversial.

Elsa Artadi.

Thing is that their base is incensed, and all the rhetoric keeps fueling the flames, no matter how empty it is at the end.

One would think that by now somebody from within the independentist fron would have already said that the emperor is naked, but it doesn't seem that it'll happen. It seems clear that ERC is done with the shenanigans, though, as most messages coming form them seem reasonable and kinda fed up with the whole situation, but however CiU is named these days have really turned into firebrands.

Yeah, it's clear that the people at the top of ERC (to languishites: the left wing separatist party, in coalition with the separatist right wing party that holds the regional government) want to call it a day and live to fight another day. To be frank it's what I would do: take more autonomy and strengthen my hand for another clash in a few years. But their base is so incensed that they can't backtrack now. The brass tried to remove unilateral independence from their party platform, and the membership blocked them from doing so.

I missed the news about ERC trying to backtrack from unilateral independence but members preventing them from doing so...doesn't bode well.

Thanks, so is a literal translation something like a sleeping bump?

The Larch

It does not have any literal translation, AFAIK.

Take into account that Latin American countris will surely have different versions of the word.

In Argentina they're called lomas de burro.

You saw a sign saying "badenes sonoros" which means "audible speed bumps". They are supposed to cause a rumble through the suspension of the car.

Excellent, nice explanation, thanks.
