Good to see "Neil" there with his name crossed out.

What was all that "invasion" stuff about? Can someone give a brief history?

To the best of my recollection, it involved a socialist/communist message board. Several members from Languish went over to the commie board to troll and/or debate. Some of the commies came back here and trolled back. Eventually, one of them was able to launch a DoS attack or something similar that managed to knock out the server for a while.

Is there anyway I can find that on my home pc?
SOme routers now put a HTML file on your PC with your info.  Otherwise no.  You could reset it and set it up again.

Aaah....now the right wing bias of this board is beginning to make sense.  :D :D

Internet grooming:
So, this year at uni I'm doing a course entitled internet and new media.
We're studying....all kinds of cool stuff in this. How society works online, forums and the like.
Yesterday the teacher told us about some research she did some time back.

According to her internet forums work just like ape society.
On a basis of grooming.
That is the more important a member of the community someone is the more the others groom them.
This grooming takes the form of quoting them or referring to them by name.
Quite...weird to think of forums in that way...But it does kind of work like that...

She should do an experiment on artificial grooming - see how it changes a status and see what happens when the artificial groomong is removed -with full permission fronm the participants of course

Who gets "groomed" on Languish? I suspect we are all generally too much the self-centred assholes. Our forum is less characterized by "grooming" and more by that other common primate habit: "feces-flinging". :D

Indeed, I was thinking of how it applies to places I go as she spoke.
For the forums she studied she even had cool graphs showing each member's 'standing'. I'll have to try and steal them sometime.

It was quite interesting stuff really, there was always a clear 'alpha'.
This one poster rose from nothing to being miles ahead of the others in references then she suddenly stopped posting one day....and after a while another poster (who started posting midway through the old one's reign and was rather middling) suddenly shot up to being the alpha.

I guess...with languish it would formerly have been Jaron with the poll options needing to have his name. But his social standing was one of lowest common denominator not high...
I think the forums she studied may have been too nice.

I have to try and steal her software tool to see what it says about here and other forums I go to.
