I think this is probably a big part of it:

Obviously there's issues like access to healthcare etc but I hadn't realised just how devastating and everywhere the opioid crisis is in the US.

I think I saw those graphs earlier today on Twitter, some of the ones that went together with them were quite chilling, like the ones dealing with child mortality.

Edit: Here are a couple of them:

And here's another one that sheds even more light into the problem:

I assume firearm injuries being the leading cause of death among under 18 year olds probably doesn't help with the gap at young ages.

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/29/health/us-children-gun-deaths-dg/index.html

QuoteFirearms accounted for nearly 19% of childhood deaths (ages 1-18) in 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wonder database. Nearly 3,600 children died in gun-related incidents that year. That's about five children lost for every 100,000 children in the United States. In no other comparable country are firearms within the top four causes of mortality among children, according to a KFF analysis.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Matt Walsh: Slavery was good for blacks, because they don't have to live in Africa now. Also, without slavery anywhere every, none of us would be here, so slavery was good, on the whole.

Who is that we should care?

OK, this looks painful:

I mean it is technically true that if most things in history did not happen exactly like they did none of us would be here. I mean other people would be here, just not us.

If the Germans hadn't invaded Poland and the Japanese hadn't invaded China then the US wouldn't have re-armed in 1939 so my Grandfather wouldn't have been activated out of the reserves and my grandmother would never have been recruited to work as office staff in the new Pentagon. Since she was from Texas and he was from Maryland there is a zero chance they would have ever met without re-armament happening right at that time. So I wouldn't exist. But I am not sure that makes either of those actions by Japan and Germany good things.

If you go by that logic virtually everything that happened in history is a good thing therefore. Kind of a weird position for a conservative Catholic like Walsh to take.

I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Awful flight yesterday.KLM.
First flight delayed so at Amsterdam catching the second is a mad dash.... Delayed by security going super slow and behaving like
everything is fine.
Screaming toddler. Absolutely knackered. He falls asleep in my arms as we dash for plane 2 once finally through security.
The run cannot be good for a pregnant woman.
Finally make it to Geneva... And they've decided to leave our suitcases and push chair in Amsterdam.
In one of these cases is medicine my partner needs to avoid death.

We are just lucky we were meeting her parents and this wasn't a regular holiday or things could have been even more fucked.

If you have to run to make your connecting flight it's safe to assume the luggage won't make it.
