Which area would that be, out of curiosity? My guess is one of Ciutat Vella, Barceloneta or Nou Barris.

Barcelona is one of the most densely populated cities in the EU. Our population isn't really that large, but the urban area is really small compared to other big European capitals, sandwiched between the mountains, the sea, and two rivers.

Yes.
Spanish people live some of the most densely populated lives in the world.

Aha! So the square km of doom is in Collblanc. But that's not Barcelona, it's L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (which is a suburb of Barcelona and the most crowded city in Spain).

The thing that amazed our spanish exchange student the most is just how much space we have here in Canada.
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

We have plenty of space in Spain. We just don't live in it. We merely watch it go by when we travel around the country. A boring, brownish landscape without end.

Rural depopulation has been a thing for half a century and it won't get better. It's one of the factors in the Catalonian affaire. The areas around coastal Catalonia are densely populated, whereas most of the country (especially Castille) is quasi-deserted and bereft of young people and job opportunities.

I really don't get the rights obsession with those people into gender politics and non binary gender identity whatnot. You'd think they were running the world rather than being just a handful of harmless oddballs you're unlikely to ever run into.
I think people are taking issue with the thought process.  Having two and just two mutually-exclusive genders seems like one of the basic givens in the understanding of many people.  If that can be defined away, then pretty much anything can be defined away.

The Romans had three though. -_-

Though I don't know if any actual people claimed the neutral gender at the time :hmm:

Romans knew the difference between sex and gender, unlike puritan Anglos.  :P Gender was for grammar. Still the case today for Romance languages, and not just for them actually.
"Problem" nowadays being masculine has merged with neutral in most Romance languages.
Of course Romans knew about eunuchs and hermaphrodites. ;)
But then, even gender-neutral languages such as modern Persian do not mean an enlightened society ahem.

Barcelona Shmarcelona. :P It's in the metropolitan area after all. Who knows where Barcelona itself finishes and Hospitalet begins?

I got it from this map, which is quite enlightening:

Check the population densities in Madrid or Barcelona and then compare with London. Pretty damning.

From the article Tyr linked:

QuoteThere are 33 1km² areas across Europe with a population of 40,000 or more: 23 are in Spain, and ten are in France. England's most densely populated km², in West London, has just over 20,000 people in it.

Bah, you've been to Wyoming - nothing but open spaces there.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Interesting maps and article.

I found Japan to be more crowded than England. About 80% of Japan appeared to be steep thickly-wooded mountains and rather in accessible; wherever the land was flat there was a town/city. Contrariwise much of England is habitable but also has nearby hills/moorland etc; it can feel reasonably spacious (not compared to NA of course).

Ugh. Must be hell.

I always found Barcelona to be quite livable compared to other capitals though. I suspect that since the overall population of the metro area is smaller compared to, say, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, etc... the actual density of people walking the streets of town on a daily basis is smaller.

Touristy areas are pure hell though.

That's the thing about Barcelona, there are not *that* many people living there, relatively speaking (it's what, 1.5 million people in the city itself?), but the physical space is so constrained by geography that population density is huge.
