We have only Northwestel.  This, incedentally, is the same reason I can't have an iPhone.   :(

Will you even have network in those rural communities in Yukon, BB?

Yes.  There is cell coverage in every Yukon community, even the really small ones with <100 people.

However there is no cell coverage for the up to 100s of kms between the communities...

I walked in saying I wanted a pay-as-you-go phone.  They told me they have them, but they don't work in the "communities" (all the small towns outside off Whitehorse).  Since I do go to those towns I thought I'd get a plan phone instead.  But yeah I was shocked they don't have any for less than $150.

And GF points to why - there is no competition for cell phones here.  We have only Northwestel.  This, incedentally, is the same reason I can't have an iPhone.   :(

What the hell?  Here I got my plan phone from T-Mobile for free...and they waived the start up fee...

All I had to pay was the monthly charge...which is pretty low before the outrageous mobile phone taxes kick in.

The US market for cellphone is extremely competitive.

The Canadian market for cellphone has effectively 2 player. 1 is CDMA (Bell Empire in association with the Telus Empire) & 1 is GSM (Rogers Empire).

There is no competition. We get fuck up the ass, often.

Don't Americans just have contract deals?
I remember back when I was running orientation for the foreign students we had to explain the pay and go system for their benefit.

No, we do have some prepaid options, but they are less common.

I went to pick up a cell phone since I'm heading out of town and won't be able to snag a work phone.

What a damn rip-off.  I specifically said I wanted the cheapest phone.  The cheapest phone is $150 with tons of features I don't need.

I only need it to call home to say I'm okay, so I want the cheapest plan.  The cheapest plan is still $25 per month.  Want voicemail and call display?  Another $12.

So I'm grumbling at this point, but when they go to activate it they claim I owe them $250, and rattled off some account number.  I haven't had a cell phone for over 5 years, so I guess it's possible, but they wouldn't tell me what the money was for, only claiming I'd have to call some other number.

So fuck 'em.  They get no money from me today.
That's pretty crappy.  My plan is about $30, but at least I got the phone for free.

Of course, I'd never get an iPhone, for any reason.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

Have you shopped around at any other store? A lot of places in the US super cheap phones when you sign a 2 year contract.
