I'd definitely recommend renting a car. It isn't expensive, the driving is quite civilized, and it opens a lot more possibilities (also breaks you from the strict tourist trail).

I once had a few days to spend outside Paris on history nerd stuff, and I went in the other direction: Verdun, the Argonne Forest Memorial, Fort Hackenberg (one of the Maginot Line forts), and Luxembourg (was planning on Bastogne but ran out of time--got stuck wandering around Luxembourg city instead, which was quite pleasant).

I thought Verdun and Hackenberg were really cool. I can't compare with Normandy as I've never been, but I think I made the right decision.

Good time of the year to go there, since the temperature should be pleasant and Ed's family is not roaming the Normand countryside yet.

Rome and Florence was The Awesome. Not easy to leave Rome behind.
Waiting on our flight to Paris. Language will be more limiting on this next phase of the trip.
