I've seen this set of mugshots before - from what I recall, it is somewhat misleading, in that the some of the women pictured were charged with "keeping a bawdy house" - that is, as living off the income of prostitutes.

Perhaps these were themselves former prostitutes, but not necessarily how they earned their money when the pics were taken.

And the man from Toronto leaps to defend the honor of Montreal ladies of the evening. Proof that Canada really does work as a nation.

  Actually, come to think of it, I even hung out with prostitutes in Montreal, maybe 8 years ago.  At a fast-food restaurant off the main drag where they were cooling their heels (and yes, eating poutine) during a slow period.

In the Church/Gerrard neighbourhood I lived in all those years ago, there was a Harveys (a burger chain) restaurant on the corner. To this day it is affectionately known as Hooker Harveys
