That's actually not too bad.  It was hitting more than $3,000 per theater, which would make some bucks (like 8 or 10 million) in a "real" release.

It's just "okay"; it really isn't that much an impressive PSA for a film that came out in Christmas in so few screens, which so much "hype".

I'm interested in seeing the VoD grosses, though, if those become available. IIRC this is the first high-profile film ever to come out day-and-date with its theatrical release.

PSA's dillute as you expand; it wouldn't have got 8-10 milion. If all the film can muster in a 300 theater release after all the hype the film's had, on Christmas day (one of the biggest moviegoing days of the year) is just 3000 PSA, it really isn't a great result. It's not "terrible", but given it probably will go away quickly, there won't be that much money to be had for Sony (in theaters, at least).

That's why I put the range in there, but the hype worked: the theaters that screened it were apparently packed.  They also released it simultaneously online, which means there were people who could stay home and get stoned watching a dumbass Seth Rogan movie on release day.

We are talking about PSA, though. Quite often an independent cinema will have larger screens than screen #37 of your local multiplex.
