As a kid I just figured he was French or Canadian.  I mean sure Van Damme is not very French sounding but neither was Marshall MacDonald.

First name's "Jean Claude", which is as French as it gets. Van Damme is actually a stage name too, although IIRC his real surname is also Flemish-sounding.

His real surname is Van Varenberg.
