In the Spanish version Manuel was made to be Italian because of how offensive his character was to Spaniards. I guess we didn't care much about offending Italians

:D

/I saw the edit. :P

The show's great, besides that. A lot of the unpleasantness is intentional, part of the British archetype Basil Fawlty satirizes.

Yeah, I figured as much. There was just something about the puerile Spanish insults that I couldn't get past. :(

In the Catalan version Manuel was Mexican, in the Spanish version he was Italian. I grew up watching the Catalan one so I got mixed up for a moment.

Americans do not get European humour. Film at 7, 8, 11 and a featurette at 12.

I don't know about that. I love stuff that's been done by Eddie Izzard, Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg and The Thick Of It...or would it be your contention that all are in the American idiom?

Edit: That was just what immediately came to mind. Absolutely Fabulous and Fresh Meat also just popped into my head.

Ah gotcha. That's interesting.

I never liked Ricky Gervais much...not sure what his appeal is. Yes, The Office was good. But generally I find him arrogant and annoying.

He's only good when he's set up with a foil like Karl Pilkington on the Idiot Abroad shows or the podcasts they did.

Not a big fan of Gervais, either. I liked Extras, but more for the guest stars than anything else. IMHO he tries too hard, and his fake smile into the camera can be jarring. YMMV.

I can get French&Belgian humour, but never really got into British humour.  Except Hot Fuzz and all that series of movies with the same actors, these guys were extremely funny.

re Ricky Gervais:  I don't understand why somebody so portly would wear such tight-fighting clothes, like those atrocious v-neck t-shirts.  Granted they're black, but they're not the fucking 2001 monolith, where light can't escape.  We can still see your gut, man.

I like Gervais; the fact he comes across as a bit of a cunt is part of the charm, imho.

Well, I think most comedians are assholes and Gervais is one of those comedians that do not have an elaborate stage persona to hide behind. :P

For a while, yeah. Found it wore off really quickly.

He just has this way of talking that can get old pretty fast. But I guess it is a matter of personal taste.

Also because 90 shady Belgians in a bar generally make better choices than the Academy.

Seems to work for the EU.
Really the world would be a better place if most decisions were left to 90 shady Belgians in a bar, at the very least the quality of starchy foods and drink would improve.

QuoteBad news for Anglophiles: Thanks to an expiring contract, Netflix is dropping the vast majority of its BBC content from streaming on January 31. It's possible Netflix will come to a new agreement with the Brits before then, but, if not, say good-bye to Doctor Who, Luther, Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Coupling, and Top Gear, among others.

I think Amazon will still have the BBC content though.
