That seems absolutely insane for a politician to try this, how large are fines for speeding over there?

Penalty points are added to your licence or you can go to a boring speed awareness course instead. The typical fine is £100 or so.

She may have been close to her limit of penalty points (the article doesn't say), in which case she might have faced a driving ban for a limited period.

But even so, it is a very low price to place on one's honour.

UK trade minister says '50-50' chance Brexit may be stopped: paper

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's trade minister Liam Fox said there is a "50-50" chance that Brexit may be stopped if parliament rejects the government's divorce deal with the European Union next month.

"If we were not to vote for that, I'm not sure I would give it (Brexit) much more than 50-50," Fox, a leading supporter of leaving the EU, told the Sunday Times newspaper.

With three months left until the United Kingdom is due to leave the EU on March 29, May's Brexit deal is floundering, opening up a range of possibilities from a Brexit without a trade deal to calling Brexit off.

Earlier this month, May pulled a planned vote on her deal after admitting parliament would reject it. Lawmakers are set to vote on the deal in the week starting Jan. 14.

Yes and no. AFAIK there are 3 problems with reverting to WTO:

• The UK now falls under the EU Schedule. Once it is out it has to negotiate a new Schedule with ALL WTO members. This can take easily a decade or two. IIRC in the interim it can still use the EU's, but other members can initiate actions against it.
• Even inheriting the EU's Schedule would not be that great. For one thing, it was designed for the EU needs, not those of the UK.
  
• In the absence of free trade agreements the rules have to apply to all trade equally. So the UK cannot eliminate tariffs on, say, EU car components bound for Jaguar and Nissan without doing the same for those sent from China.

Nothing to worry about, just moving the swimming pools a couple of metres beyond buildings coupled with unlimited booze would create too many casualties and make keeping the islands untenable for the Brits.
