 BBC News just now - "we've got a statement now from former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. It's rather lengthy as you'll see - but, well, we'll just read it out".

Quote from: Josquius on September 08, 2022, 12:58:00 PMI blame Truss.

I mean, having to get prepared and go through the meeting and photo op must have shortened her life by several days at least.

Not to be selfish but:

When are we getting our days of mourning? :P

And: we were planning to drive into smack middle of London to the Polish embassy on Monday. Is that a bad idea now?

I imagine for the funeral and the coronation (next year? :hmm:).

I'd keep an eye on updates about travel in central London - because there may be roads closed off for ceremonies, crowds etc.

Edit: And statement from (to be) First Minister which seems very gracious to me and I think will be appreciated by unionists - but extraordinary to see something like this from a Sinn Fein leader:
QuoteMichelle O'Neill
@moneillsf
It's with deep regret that I learned of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The British people will miss the leadership she gave as monarch.

I would like to offer my sincere sympathies and condolences to her children, and wider family as they come to terms with their grief 1/4
I wish to especially acknowledge the profound sorrow of our neighbours from within the unionist community who will feel her loss deeply.

Personally, I am grateful for Queen Elizabeth's significant contribution and determined efforts to advancing peace and reconciliation 2/4
between our two islands.

Throughout the peace process she led by example in building relationships with those of us who are Irish, and who share a different political allegiance and aspirations to herself and her Government. 3/4
Having met Queen Elizabeth on a number of occasions alongside my colleague, the late Martin McGuinness, I appreciated both her warmth and courtesy. 4/4

That was well written.
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

Quote from: The Larch on September 08, 2022, 01:40:06 PMSo it's going to be Charles III, it seems.

Good. It would have been weird to try to call him a different name after all this time.

Yep. As normal as it may have been historically that was ridiculous in the modern age.

Via Aaron Bastani, striking to see the RMT - the most hard left union - suspend strike action because of the death of a hereditary monarch :hmm:
QuoteRMT's Mick Lynch on death of Queen Elizabeth 2nd:

"RMT joins the whole nation in paying its respects to Queen Elizabeth.

"The planned railway strike action on 15 and 17 September is suspended.

"We express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and the country."

Feel like this might be a rare case of legit British exceptionalism (edit: and why there's never been a proper organised revolutionary left here).

Well Elizabeth II was the Queen of the only communist monarchy in Grenada, so it checks out. God save the Queen comrads!

What is exceptionalism about not wanting to give cheap PR shots against themselves by the right wing media? :p

Incidentally, I think this is clearly right
QuoteWe should build the Queen Elizabeth Nuclear Power Station, the Queen Elizabeth Northern Powerhouse Rail, and a million Queen Elizabeth-class homes on the Queen Elizabeth Productivity Belt (née Green Belt) around our major cities. Anything less would be an insult.
