I wondered why those bastahds in Exeter got the day off.

In western societies these days the general rule is:
personal happiness > making a move that will improve your family's station in future generations.

There are more hot women than there are rich men, so it's not like they're turning down rich guys left and right.

Depends how you define rich.

New money marries the hot ones, old money marries within class and keeps a hot one or two on the side.

From what I've seen of rich people the reality is more prosaic: rich guys, new money or old, simply do not associate with people outside of their class much; they tend to go out with people they meet socially; and they are just as concerned as the non-rich what their family and friends will think of their significant other.

That said, certainly some are willing to marry beautiful golddiggers. Though even in that case, the most common pattern is for rich guys divorcing their first wives to marry younger women who are, as it were, in danger of falling out of the upper class. Marrying women who have worked in the porn industry is I would think pretty rare.
