How do you figure they are impossible to defend against?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

From what I've read with the bridge is Ukraine and Russia have a sort of agreement with it where Ukraine is allowing it to stay open under the promise it won't be used to transport oil.
It's half wrecked so it's only allowing one car at a time with tight security.
Ukrainian reasoning is they have to give the civilians somewhere to try to escape and they don't want to see starvation.

Not mentioned here but.... Russia has an election in September.
Obviously. Russian election. Not real.
But not totally fake either.
I've seen theories Putin holding off on a mass conscription until that is done.
