Yep.
The 2025 Rugby League World Cup was supposed to take place in the US and Canada but was cancelled, as a matter of fact.

All the more reason to import Rugby League players. :P

Well...at least this means our Rugby Union team might be decent in the future.

Rugby League, much closer to gridiron, does not exist in a meaningful way in South Africa.  :contract:

I would just like a few of those Springboks. Maybe Trump can start thinking the white population of New Zealand is oppressed by the Maori and we get some All Blacks as well.

Never gonna happen, he'd be too confused by the name.

And why would an all black leave New Zealand to live in the United States? I suppose in the very short term if the monetary rewards were worth it. But that would have to be a lot of money.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

Obviously none of the Springboks will either.

Maybe - but it probably depends more on the US developing a professional league :P I think the All Blacks basically all play in New Zealand because their league is really strong while I think South African players play all over the place.

And maybe the US will - Americans love sport.

The Americans love sport so much that it took basically 50 years to create something resembling a European football league.

They already have lots of sports - maybe not the same ones as other countries - and at least 3 of their big sports have about a million games a season  There is always sport on.

European football has a slightly different vibe and I think Rugby is the same - far longer, more spaced out seasons (very different from international tournaments too).

But we did create one! Where did you get the 50 year number from?

Soccer was more popular than American Football before the Great Depression which put Soccer in hibernation for awhile for whatever reason. But I don't think that has anything to do with our love of sports just how things turned out over here.

Exactly, the Americans already have the sports they love and so it doesn't make a lot of sense to say that because Americans love sport, they will introduce another sport into their culture

You can only play for the All Blacks if you play for a domestic team in NZ. So when I lived there they were everywhere - you'd see them out and bout town constantly and every charity event would include them. Definitely helps builds a strong bond between the national team and the general public. Also clearly helps with the team cohesion and logistics of AB training.

Sheilbh

I didn't know that - that's interesting. Definitely makes sense for the team cohesion and training (a huge issue for somewhere like New Zealand).

Was Soccer more popular?  Back in the 1920's my grandfather played soccer professionally.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Not the US. But just read this about Canada.
It does credit the MLS.

Though yeah. US football history is weird. The way it was big pre war is curious.
But then that seems common in the US. Back then it was a more normal country with real cities and communities.
