I don't do meditation.  I drink alcohol to relax, like normal people.

If Microsoft Excel decided to stop working overnight, the world would practically end.

Quote from: Richard Hakluyt on December 23, 2025, 11:38:30 AMI think we need to create powerful trade unions and join socialist parties; perhaps some of the more exuberant can become anarchists  :hmm:

Perhaps a Temperance League? But I don't like the sound of that as drink provides some solace from the pain of having malignant half-wits in charge

Eugene Debs almost made a viable third party candidate until Ross Perot came along and actually split the GOP vote.
Early unionisation in Norway was clearly inspired by guest workers returning from the United States. My maternal great grandfather was, well, suspiciously into both temperance and anarcho-syndicalism, but could not see why his daughters needed an education.

Back in my early teens, I picked up a lot of Jack London novels from the library. One of them was "The Iron Heel". I sort of scoffed at it, it was preachy, and unlike London's novels from Alaska, not very believable. In the 1980s, that is. People would use Marxist analysis during conversations? Riiight.

I did re-read it, and it is still rather rubbish. And so is almost any literature coming from the United States these days.
Stop the pessimism, we will get through this, your European cousins are here for both the UK and the USA.

So Trump put his name on the Kennedy Center, something prohibited by law. Not that it matters anymore.

The annual Christmas Eve Jazz Jam was cancelled in protest of the name change.  There's at least one lawsuit as well.

I've also read that (to no one's surprise) Trump's "Saving" the center was grossly over-exaggerated  This past year's attendance was the lowest post-Covid.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Surprised it doesn't have gaudy gold trim.

This time next Xmas trump will be launching airstrikes against individual social media posters who criticise him.

I think it's a net negative* , his base don't want foreign adventures and many don't give a toss about foreign non-white people, so the protecting oppressed Xians fig leaf doesn't counter-balance that.

* oh and more importantly innocent people will be killed, all in the service of a boastful social media post.

I disagree.  I don't think trump supporters are going to frame lobbing missiles as a foreign adventure.  You need US casualties for that.

I also think Trump framing the action as defense of African Christians will either be a net positive or net neutral.  It's Trump signalling to the prosperity gospel folk that what they want matters to him.  Their opinions matter.

Why are we assuming that innocent people died?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
