Yeah well...he knows what plays well with his base.

Performing is a fundamental part of politics. We are performative beings, and quite often, ideas and beliefs are forged through performance, tested through the gaze, real or imagined, of others.

What I believe Zoupa was pointing out is less the performative aspect of the demonstrations than their apparent inocuity, their apparent lack of disruption.

In a way, that's what I think Tamas is also pointing out: the "No Kings" protests certainly achieves certain goals, namely, getting a sense of who your fellow companions are; fostering and nurturing encounters and dynamizing grassroots movements. These are important.

What these sorts of demonstrations have trouble achieving is their purpose as "test" or "resolve", which is often performed through the disruption of routine, or normalcy. A handful of demonstrations, months apart, can't really signal that sort of resolve. These are also important. But they are harder to achieve in the US, if only because disruption has been appropriated by techbros, and does not enjoy the same level of legitimacy anymore in grassroots politics. This is also where the lack of social safety nets, and labor protections, undermine democracy: who will protest when protests can cost you your job, and your lack of job can cost you your healthcare?

Trump suggested buying Argentinan beef to undercut prices. Gotta love the reaction of all those farmers wearing MAGA hats. Turned out the first A stood for Argentina  :lmfao:

It is really gross how he props up regimes he personally likes with our tax dollars as if US interests are at stake and then pointlessly antagonizing others.

The farmers know that DEI is what costs them profits.

Yeah. Anybody hoping that somehow gross corruption, mismanagement, incompetence, or wanton cruelty would get Americans to turn on Trump even, or even especially, when it hurts them personally has not been paying attention for the past decade.

won't change minds, except maybe a select few. But looking from the outside I'm past hope and into the schadenfreude stage.

Indeed.  All that matters is that somewhere, somehow a Lib might have been owned.

I'd be quite happy with this if the people getting hurt were all the controlling multi-billionaires, tech bros, etc.

I'd be quite happy for them to live their filthy rich lives if nobody was getting hurt to prop them up.
I think this is quite different in that damaging their power actually does have a material uplift for regular people.

Ideally the left should start propagating the idea that a lot of the GDP figures are fake in the sense it is some sort of bubble and therefore not real / inflated. Once they convince people of that, it becomes easier to get them to support income & wealth redistribution even if it does mean a temporary hit to GDP, which won't actually affect ordinary people if it means real incomes are going up for the lower 50%.

Razgovory

Trump appear to be suing the Justice Department 230 million dollars for investigating him.  He will get to decide if he gets the money.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
