Trump dismisses the whole Poland incident as expected.

A couple of days (so about 3 global scandals), ago, there was a great example of how the media sane-washes and enables Trump. He was on his way to his plane or helicopter or something after the latest round of Russian terror bombing when a journo yelled at him through the noise: are you ready to start the next round of sanctions against Russia?

He replied, in passing: "yep!"

That "yep" made the news circle around the world, very respectable sources saying "president Trump says he is ready to impose new sanctions"

No FFS he isn't. You can't take what he says at face value even when he actually says it. In this case all he did was the quickest reaction-sound to get him out of the situation.

[languish] It does. [/languish]

It seems like our latest sanction delay tactic is a "hey Euros, you first" kind of ploy.  And a very clever one, because it lets Putin's man Orban tie things up.

I mean, after listening to the NATO briefing introducing the operation, it sounded mostly like things we either already do, and/or should have been doing the last three years.

Not to mention positioning multi-billion dollar advanced fighter systems to counter $20K drones probably has the Russian chuckling a bit.  But perhaps good symbolically, and the best we can do until we develop more economical counter-drone systems.  On that note, besides the need to ramp up armaments production, there is a very strong need to cut down the usual bureaucratic roadblocks in development of said new systems.

Poland's call today for a no-fly zone over Ukraine is much more interesting (but likely not going to go anywhere).

Crazy_Ivan80

It's not going to go anywhere now, but the call has been made.
So given time and as people get used to the idea it'll become more compelling and achievable

I wonder what happened to the anti drone laser stuff.
I recall a year or two back that was testing very well. Seemed to finally give a use to weapon based lasers.

A no fly zone over Ukraine...

1: What about Ukrainian planes? They were talking of reopening Lviv. Plus the UAF of course.
2: I was thinking when the drones came over  Poland a good approach could be a buffer over Western Ukraine. Wonder if calling for a whole Ukraine no fly zone is a first step towards this.

Poland and Romania are asking Ukraine to share their anti-drone tech. Ukraine is now being asked to close the skies over NATO.

Europe should pray that Ukraine wins this war, because the resentment towards the west is certainly building within the ZSU rank and file.

That is beyond pathetic.

Can't disagree with any of this. The positive I take away from it is that NATO minds are focused on it more now.  As for positioning bait - we can only hope the Russians take it.  That will really get the attention of NATO.

I am confused by your phrasing of this.  Could you provide a link to your source? I could find no relevant sources when searching your phrasing.

It would be if it is accurate, but it is not.

There is a lot to unpack in that post.  First, no European nation is asking Ukraine to protect NATO airspace. It is the other way around. Poland is proposing that NATO protect Ukrainian airspace.  Second, what NATO learned first hand is that it cannot fight low cost drones with high cost missiles.  It needs to develop its own low cost tech to do that.  From reports I have read BAE has developed that tech and is in the process of implementing it into European assets - it already does that for the Americans.  Another way to solve the problem is to implement what the Ukrainians are doing - its a win win because the Ukrainians get to commercialize their tech to further support the war effort. Third, I have no idea where the resentment line comes from.  I wonder if that is Zoupa just assuming a mindset from the first two things he put in his post.

The Minsky Moment

I don't see a problem in asking Ukraine to share tech with NATO.  Is there really some objection from Ukraine about this?
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.
