Quote from: The Minsky Moment on August 02, 2025, 03:51:46 PMIn the real estate business, any vaguely conscious person can look at a rent roll and interest costs and make reasonable decisions on price; in international trade, tariffs schedules are massively detailed and trade rules are fiendishly complex, to the degree that there aren't really overall international trade experts, but rather experts in subcategories like navigating rules of origin or handling dispute procedures.

The main takeaway of the Q1 town hall at my company was that nobody actually knew how much making the product would end up costing, much less how to evidence those costs during commercial negotiations with the customers.

And that's just one element of the car. It's pretty much impossible to estimate the impact to the supply chain of a whole ass vehicle.

This article kind of asks the question why Trump is getting away with acting demented. But it answers it itself, seems like unknowingly, when it lists examples where he was lying trough his teeth and making shit up.

How is the world supposed to notice the difference between demented Trump believing the bullshit stories and "data" he talks about, and non-demented Trump telling the same kind of stories every single day?

Despite what people may think, Norway is not all oil, fish, blondes and fjords and extremely high prices. There's some high-tech, highly specialised industry here.

I got the task of talking to local heads of the export industry, and they shrugged about the tariffs. "Who knows? Our market isn't the United States, as we already have branches and manufacturing there. Trump just doesn't know it. Europe is our market".

What those CEOs and CTOs did not like was the general uncertainty that comrade Trump brings.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

The Minsky Moment

We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

Same for Iceland. A good example would be Össur, producer of high-tech orthopaedics .

A burger who lost a foot due to diabeetus will be waddling through Walmart with the best of them, thanks to Icelandic nerds. :ccr Another example would be Keracis, producer of fish skins to treat wounds. Finns have Planmeca which is one of the world leading companies in manufacturing dental equipment and so on it goes.

The entire global manufacturing chain is riddled with these specialized companies.

In his latest tariffs demand on Taiwan, Trump wants TSMC to buy a minority stake in Intel and invest 400 billion in the US. I guess the Taiwanese should just say ok to the tariffs and see how elastic demand for modern chips in the US really is when you raise the price a lot.

In other news, the US constitution at the Congress website lost some bits liked the emoluments clause or habeas corpus. Just a glitch of course.

hmm, a vaccine that mimics introducing a virus into the body so that the body can build up antibodies...

He is so fucking stupid.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
