He takes perfectly serviceable ideas ("a heist movie with zombies!" "Seven samurai in space!") and makes the most overbloated and unbearable version of them.

Dawn of the Dead remains his best movie, imho.

I think he could be a great cinematographer, if a director could get him to expand the range of his palette and reign in his worst impulses.  As a director he definitely has an eye for getting a great shot but doesn't know what to do with it.

So, I kept hearing about this series Barbarians, how historical consultants were hired for the 1st season and all quit thereafter because it was so bad, and the 2nd season was trash.

I kept telling myself "this wasn't actually that bad?  I quite liked this actually.  It didn't seem so historically inaccurate.  It skimmed on the details here and there, maybe got a few things wrong, but it was actually decently done.

Ah, but here where I was wrong... What I saw was Barbarians rising...  Totally not the same thing!

My wife's Italian grandmother went to see what she thought was "Murder Inc" many years ago but instead it was MOnsters Inc.  She said it was good but not what she was expecting. Don't think she realized the error, though everyone else did.
PDH!

The Minsky Moment

The Farrelly Brothers released a stoner comedy called Outside Providence years ago.  When it was playing I was in a ticket line on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in back of a well-healed matronly socialite type.  She asked for two tickets to "Outside Provence".
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

I saw that.  "It's not over till both sides get their fortune cookie."

Watched 'Collateral' OK, but a somewhat pale shadow of 'Heat', Mann seems to have reused quite a bit of the imagery.

Though I did notice in one of that later scenes a very familiar face amongst the Latino heavies, it was one of the Salamanca cousins.
Must have been on of his earliest roles.

I liked Barbarians, I mean I never expect a tv show to be that accurate, capturing the feel of the period is good enough for me.  If I want history I'll read a history book.

Finished first season of Silo. It still feels like "Vault-Tec, but serious" which is not good in my book, but meh, it's watchable, I'm a sucker for mysteries and the cast is great. The end of season reveal doesn't make that much sense on the face of it, but I hope it gets clarified in the next season.

Highlight of the first season is the secondary arc about the assistant police chief having to hide what looks like a degenerative nerve disease from the nefarious Judicial body, or ELSE... and then it's revealed that he'd just be ineligible for physical jobs which seems... reasonable?  :P
