Quote from: crazy canuck on July 07, 2025, 03:31:34 PMGrumbler, this Friday is the season finale of Murderbot on Apple, but you might want to hold off on getting the promotional subscription, because season 3 of Foundation is about to drop.

Thanks for the tip!  :)
The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.   -G'Kar

Bayraktar!

Darth Wagtaros

I read the first three books of Silo and liked it. Skipped the TV show though.  Guess I'm not in the mood for more post-apocalyptic TV.
PDH!

Quote from: Syt on July 08, 2025, 01:36:44 AMBarry Lyndon on the big screen is awesome. Of course it's been a movie for me that's always been more about the visuals than the story. And the second half is still not as good as the first half. :D And movies with intermissions ... I think the most modern film I had that with was Thin Red Line when it came out?
Indian films  (And by the by I know it was massively hyped but RRR is fantastic, and it absolutely earns its intermission )

Fantastic film - though I agree with your comments totally.
Let's bomb Russia!

Admiral Yi

I rewatched The Usual Suspects and my verdict remains the same.  It's a troll.

Folks were discussing The Warriors.  It's free on US youtube right now.

Bauer

Season 2 of the sandman.  I admire the creativity of this show ( or is it just the creativity of the source material).  The song in the underworld, and the head afterwards was highlight of the first half for me.

Remember Darth Maul?
The only cool thing in the Phantom Menace?.... who was killed off after about 10 minutes of screen time.
....apparently he survived and there's midqual being made where he faces off against Darth Vader.
....Star Wars man.

He played a major role in Clone Wars and Rebels and had a cameo in Solo. :P

That's on you (and you clearly never checked the Star Wars thread). :P

I rolled my eyes when they brought him back in CW, but his appearances have consistently been among the best stories in those shows (which is why he gets his own spin off now), and Sam Witwer is great in the (voice) role.

Was originally looking forward to it as Sandman is possibly my favorite comic.

However, the allegations against Gaiman have since soured me significantly on it. :(

I just go by the assumption that everyone in show business is a drug/sex addict then I'm never disappointed.

Valmy

I mean sure some hot shot actor or music star, sure. But an author? Especially at his age? This one caught me by surprise.

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

I think with Gaiman it hits harder because he seemed one of the "good guys", progressive, trying to platform women and marginalized groups and willing to learn. But especially Sandman feels problematic now as some of it feels like self-insert or "write what you know" too much - like the story about an author keeping the muse Calliope as a sex slave for his "inspiration".

I don't know, my mental image of most writers is "degenerate drunk" so it's not too far a leap. I didn't really like first season, so I wasn't planning on watching the second anyway.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Gaiman had quite the reputation as a playboy in the 90s on the convention circuit, and at least his second marriage was an open one.  I'd say that having relations with your fans is a pretty fraught power dynamic, and having exploited it that long is bound to warp your perception of reality if it didn't start out that way.
