Gen X parents failing to facilitate their kids growing up.  At some point people are going to have to accept that blaming everything on Boomers just isn't credible any more.

Blame the boomers for not raising gen x right who then didn't have the skills to raise the gen z kids :P

There you go!

The Gen X parents in that meme Syt posted must have had a tough life, aging beyond their years.

That is a drawing.  Taking a drawing literally is usually a mistake.  The average Boomer is 70.  Their kids are in their forties.

So the drawing is wrong in that that the all the people depicted are too old?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I really don't care the meaning of the word Autism shifting from a severe disability that inhibits communication to mild social awkwardness or having a hobby.

Autism is a spectrum, but you are correct that whoever made that cartoon completely missed the boat.

Yeah, I'm kinda skeptical that a large number of people claiming to have autism actually have it.  If it just means social awkwardness and having an interest in things, then it really isn't the same or even in the same ball park as the kid who can't actually speak.

"Hi, I have a disability that actually makes me better at certain high paying jobs!  My greatest disadvantage is that I'm too good at my job!"

It definitely is unfortunate that the same name covers the kid who can't speak, and the high-functioning adult who can't grasp social cues, but the latter case can still be pretty life-altering.  The fact that this mild disability happened to in some cases make you highly suitable for certain high-paying jobs is a recent phenomenon.

Razgovory

I don't think it is a coincidence that a large number of people claim a disability that makes them better suited to well-paying, prestigious jobs.  I am skeptical of any disability that involves having too much of a positive trait.

Tamas

It does feel unhelpful that it is such a broad spectrum.

Josquius

It makes sense to me.
Given the way autism works, it's not something clear like having an extra chromosome or something, it makes sense it wouldn't be a binary of "normal" or completely non verbal.
That it's a broad spectrum is what the science suggests.
The trouble then, if everyone is on the spectrum somewhere, would be where we draw the hazy line of when it becomes useful to label something autism.

It is certainly believable that a little of something is good and useful to have whilst too much is harmful. This is the case for a lot of stuff.

I think this cartoon exaggerates. But I definitely agree with the core message that autistic people have always been there, they just weren't noted as being anything other than quirky historically.

In ye olden times we also locked up a lot more "crazies" so you'd be less likely to see them around.

Take that back. I'm way more angry now than when I was younger. And I have the high blood pressure to show for it :D

Where does this idea that people falsely claim to be autistic to get jobs come from?
