Some protests in front the US treasury building

Can't find anything about it on the big media sites.  I found a few videos on local news sites.

They made plenty of space in their jails for these protestors when the released the Jan 6 gang

Wit the recent offer to deport all Gazans by sending in US troops, things are looking good for the US...

Not sure how many allies are going to answer to the next 9/11...

Fuck, stay safe guys.

There's no way troops will be going to Gaza.

At some point Trump will also promise US peacekeepers in Ukraine now THAT is going to cause a bigger storm

I think the numerous civil wars were kinda disturbing.  So were the Goth and other barbarian invasions.  When the Vandals sacked Rome, I figured one or two people took notice.

Same for Byzance.  When the Emperor dismantled most of its armies, people didn't really notice.  They probably cheered that taxes were not as heavy as before. A few years later though...

There's no way the US is still part of the UN by next year. They are already out of the UN Human rights council and they cut of funding for some UN backed peace missions.  Well, the one in Haiti at least, but I think there are others too.

DOGE goons have allegedly entered NOAA and are deleting data, calling the agency a menace for the USA.

Gotta think the destruction of property is a criminal offence.  But now that the USSC has ruled a President can do no wrong, and the president can now preemptively pardon, there is no limit on the damage they can do.

They end of US constitutionalism?

The next Article 5 activation will be against the US, so maybe a few?

The Minsky Moment

Quote from: Richard Hakluyt on Today at 03:33:23 AMI think we will see quite a lot of this sort of thing going forward. In a competition for contracts non-US companies will have an advantage over their American counterparts; the USA is no longer a reliable trading partner.

It's more than that.  Every foreign company currently using US suppliers for critical inputs is going to have to review existing arrangements and make plans for potential disruption.  That may result in existing contracts being non-renewed or cancelled outright.

Well the insanity and speed of the wrecking is a surprise, but this has the feel of the Yeltsin years and the collapse of the remaining soviet social and economic structures.

Incoherent babblings from a leader, whilst his henchmen dismantle the state?

Some oligarchs in the US are going to make a killing, maybe even follow in the footsteps of their Russian role-models and have violent turf wars?

Quote from: viper37 on February 04, 2025, 09:57:27 PMAh, in other news, Columbia has cancelled a huge petroleum contract in the US.  The contract was confirmed Monday by the Columbian state corporation, but cancelled by the President tonight under the guise of environmental protection.

A huge fracking project in Texas and New Mexico, apparently.  Was supposed to produce 90 000 barels a day.  Ecopetrol was to invest 880 000 000$ in this project.

I guess Columbia is really scared of Trump now...

I think we will see quite a lot of this sort of thing going forward. In a competition for contracts non-US companies will have an advantage over their American counterparts; the USA is no longer a reliable trading partner.

It goes much deeper than that. The Globe and Mail is full of stories today about corporate interests and governments across the country, examining how they can limit their exposure to the United States and diversify into other trading and business partners.

I am sure that is happening. He or else in the world since Trump has threatened every close trading partner the United States has with tariffs.  And those few who have not been directly threatened can see what's coming.

Trump is certainly a disruptor. But I think the consequences of that disruption are not what he intended, or at least what those who encouraged him to do it had intended.

Maybe becoming an isolated autarky state is exactly what they wanted. That means high paying jobs for everyone.

Trump - he just keeps coming up with these quarter-baked international diplomacy ideas.  Whether it's the US taking over Greenland, to Canada joining the US, to the US taking over Gaza - in each case there's the kernel of a seed of an idea.

In each case though it would take years of very careful negotiations, needing the buy-in of multiple parties - first and foremost the consent of the people involved.

Like I said yesterday - you could kind-of squint and imagine Gaza becoming a US Territory or protectorate.  It wouldn't be the independent state Palestinians want, but a self-governing US territory, with US aid and development money flowing in would be an interesting idea.  I'm not sure why the US would want to get so much more involved in US politics that way, but whatever.

But Trump can't put in the hard work to do it.  Instead he just floats the idea out there and expects everyone else to just do it somehow.

Same with the 51st state of Canada idea.  If he seriously wanted to pursue that, instead of threatening tariffs he'd be recommending an even closer trade relationship.  Offer free movement - essentially remove the border.  Offer carrots, not sticks.  It would take decades, but I could see it happening.

Instead he has Canadians boing the US anthem at hockey games.  Several years ago in Edmonton, for some reason the US anthem went out.  The entire crowd went on to sign it, with no accompanyment or words being shown.  I can't imagine that happening today.
