Trump will put a 200% tariff on Russian pineapples :contract: :P

Putin will fail to respond to this and will take this as a sign of weakness, probably much to his misfortune later on.

Apparently the line "Russia helped us win the Second World War" is seen as hugely insulting in Russia, as in their telling Russia won the war almost single-handedly.

The Russian school textbooks have completely censored the decisive battle of WW2, when George Washington defeated the Germans by capturing the airports.

Quote from: crazy canuck on January 22, 2025, 05:03:32 PMIs someone going to tell him that economic sanctions are already in place?
On the economic stuff the interesting thing I think was his line about telling Saudi and Opec to bring down the price of oil adding "they're very responsible, actually, to a certain extent, for what's taking place".

Which is sort of true - Russia is still earning lots of money from oil and gas. Increase supply and that will have an effect on Russia's economy.

As with the NATO defence spending to 5% - even if Europe meets in the middle - a Europe spending 3.5% of GDP on defence and cheaper hydrocarbons is not a great situation for Putin.

Worth flagging there are still options that could be open on sanctioning. For example Europe has recently imported a record amount of Russian LNG this year. My understanding is there are financial institutions and channels that are not heavily sanctioned precisely because they're necessary for that trade. If you don't care about your European allies....

Julia Davis who regularly translates domestic russki propaganda boomer tv over on twitter just released this absolute gem.

Oh, love - absolutely love - that the Russians are being critical of Trump on social media! No better way to get him to fully commit to Ukraine!

A lot of oil industry targets hit overnight in russia. The Ukrainians are really gearing up their strategic campaign.

I love his fixation with TARIFFS!!!! Does Russia even export much at all to the US nowadays?

Yeah, just the regular global commodities. What is interesting is that this is a threatening message, delivered in a language the russki understands very well. Putin will be expected to kiss the ring as befits his station.

I was told Trump would have ended this war before he was even sworn in as President, or 24 hours after he took office at the latest. He didn't fulfill one of his key election promises.

Nobody cares but it is worth mentioning.

Nobody seems to care much about him now saying he won't introduce crippling tariffs. If he was considered a reasonable person, he'd be grilled on this. But because everyone (including and especially his fans) knows he is an unhinged conman, he gets away with it. It's fucked up.

It's a language the Russki understands as weakness because the threats are empty and because the absence of any threat to upgrade assistance to Ukraine is so obvious and glaring that the absence is the message.

Razgovory

I don't know why Trump seems to think tariffs are good threats.  I can't tell if he doesn't know what a tariff is or he's just trying to trick Americans.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
