Quote from: DGuller on January 20, 2025, 03:30:05 PMIt really scares me when I think of the implications of all the tech giants allying with an authoritarian politician.  How can any regular Joe, or even most irregular Joes, put up resistance against that alliance?  They have access to data that would probably leave even Mother Teresa vulnerable to blackmail, and plenty of resources to set up an efficient surveillance state that was not technically feasible just decades ago.

All it requires is a friendly chat with Xi for a few pointers and Musk's* your uncle.  :bowler:

*British idiom alert.

Good job, Americans. You've let the Nazis in the house.
Colonel Caliga is Awesome.

I don't do meditation.  I drink alcohol to relax, like normal people.

If Microsoft Excel decided to stop working overnight, the world would practically end.

I bet he got a good chuckle out of that. So edgy.

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

Quote from: PJL on January 19, 2025, 06:23:41 PMTrump first time round was a tragedy. Trump second time round will be a farce.

This feels very much the opposite. I could actually laugh a bit the first time.

But we will see I guess.

What do Trump's renaming orders actually mean? Will federal organizations be legally required to use the new names?
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

I don't get the feeling that a majority of Americans here voted him in office.  I could be wrong though.  They may be all closet Trump supporters and just pretend to dislike him.

with the power they have they can make the data to blackmail anyone. It doesn't even have to be real anymore

Fascism has always been in the American house.  This is just another incarnation of the America First movement from the early 20th century.

Trump missed a trick with the crypto, if he'd examined it's core feature he would have called it BS Dollars.
Then with a stroke of EO pen he could make it fully convertible with the US dollar.

That way no matter how badly his tariff's went, ramping up US domestic inflation and hammering US exports, any worsened trade balances could be off-set by his prodigious daily BS$ output.

Single-handedly his spiel of BS could save the US economy, with the added bonus of the commission he'd earn on each and every BS$ transaction.

Quote from: Barrister on January 20, 2025, 01:53:33 PMBy the way, the fact the inauguration was moved indoors due to "low temperatures" when the temp in DC today is -3c (26f) is always humorous to a Canadian.

To be fair, the forecast was much more dire when the decision had to be made.
The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.   -G'Kar
