Some of them have been questioned about their politics by Trump appointees who will serve as directors on the NSC and who had weeks earlier asked them to stick around. There are dozens of civil servants at the directorate level at the NSC who had anticipated remaining at the White House in the new administration.

Reminds me of a (crappy) novel I skimmed a while back. Essentially, Muslim terrorists fire dirty bombs in Europe. EU sees violent anti-Muslim pogroms. USA, appalled, takes in refugees. Muslims cause devastating attacks in USA. Iran and Israel have nuclear exchange. Radioactive Holy Land gets occupied by Muslims. USA votes in ultra-conservative evangelical president who calls for a crusade. His elite ideologically pure crusader units get the latest modern equipment that gets knocked out by EMP bursts (I guess it'd be hackers these days ), so the old guard in their 80s/90s equipment go in to save the day. The book ends with the US victorious and ruled by a Taliban-style Christian regime.

Europeans love to moan about the USA because we are so dependent on them for protection and no good deed goes unpunished 

Well the USA is now an unreliable ally, so we need to sort out European solutions to our European problems. The rotw is already looking after itself and the principal likely downside of Trump's presidency, incresed poverty and inequality within the USA, doesn't concern them. I suggest we do the same and stand on our own two feet, we'll need more taxes for the armed forces though.
