The pub scene just before the end of the Earth in the H2G2 tv series, Ford Prefect take the 6 pints of beer and hands over a fiver (duke of wellington design),saying:
"Keep the change"
Publican "What from a fiver, Sir?" "Huh, thank you Sir"
Ford "You've got ten minutes to spend it"
Publican looks confused, goes to till, before putting it in checks the bank note thoroughly up against the light.

My point .....  I think nowadays in the local here a fiver probably wouldn't stretch to  1 1/2 pints.

So I guess beer was about 50p in 1978?
A little before my time, when I started buying beer in 1982 it was still well under 100p, despite the Thatcherite inflation boom of the time.

Many/most places here you could maybe get a half pint for that much?

I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

Yeah it's a bit crazy, hereabouts you sometime see a cheaper pub advertising it's prices; I recall a weatherspones showing a £3.80 pint price special.

Edit:
Found this somewhat useful interactive map of pint prices across weatherspoons, so gives an impression of price variations across the country:

$4.85 seems quite reasonable.

I'd find out what the current local price is for a pint (UK 20 fl oz) but I have a moratorium on drinking in the local boozers.

Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".

Kraven named best movie of Sony's Spiderman universe for 2024.

Competition was Madam Web and the latest Venom.

Final episode of 'Wolf Hall - The Mirror and the Light" aired on Sunday, very good, though a bit odd to see the execution filmed inside the Victorian folly keep within Cardiff Castle.

One of the final images was of Richard Cromwell looking out from a tower/battlement to the far horizon, I wonder if this was alluding to his great-grandson leading role in executing the Stuart King and with it the divine right of kings in this country?

On bbc iplayer at the moment is an interesting documentary on Thomas Cromwell by one of his biographers:

I loved Mirror and the Light. Acting, lighting, script, score - everything was perfect.

Norgy

Still not managed to find it on any streaming service here in Norway. I am rather a "Wolf Hall" fanboi. Or fanmiddleagedboi.

Not super-impressed by the adaption of C. J. Sansom's novel "Dissolution", though.

I really hope someone will see the potential in Sansom's "Winter in Madrid". One of the few audiobooks I've heard on my walks that made me cry.
And, yes, I walk alone. Usually. If it is not for a casual date.

celedhring

Yeah, Wolf Hall isn't available on streaming in Spain either. It's a bit weird.

'Bronx' nice to see a drama/thriller about police corruption that isn't set in Chicago, LA, New York or London.

The Bronx is part of New York though...

No it's just the film's title in this instance.  :)
