Not a requirement to be antizionist.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

You should hope it'll be dismantled the way the USSR was dismantled. The East and West coasts might actually become functioning states. :P

The elimination of the Programs is the headline.  The more far reaching part of the story is the move to amend the decision-making powers of the university senate.

I read the article.

There's no doubt there's some capital "P" politics going on here.  But I looked and there was no reference to any of the other 51 programs being cut, other than there being 14 minors and 38 certificates.

Given that the Department of Women and Gender Studies still exists I'm not really outraged at this point at the elimination of this single minor program.

It is looking like the House will be even closer than 2020 and 2022 and considering the embarrassing lack of Party discipline in 2022 by the Republicans this might be an enormous shit show.

But we will see, maybe insanity is less likely to reign with a Republican White House. Still...only two or three malcontents can upend anything the majority wants to do this time.

Low enrollments? I wonder what is considered low enrollment at that bloated degree mill? Only five thousand graduates a semester? Anyway as much as I love to talk shit about my wonderful political masters, to whom I am very loyal, I doubt Trump had much to do with that.

Edit: Ok it's "The state classifies a bachelor's degree program as "low-producing" if it awards fewer than five degrees in a year and fewer than 25 degrees in five years. The state agency that oversees public higher education does not have a process for reviewing minors." But the LGBTQ+ minor had only been in existence since 2022 so I suspect at this point they had awarded exactly zero degrees having not been around for four years yet. Aggie logic.

Your post makes no sense.  You note that there are in fact 14 minors being cut but then say you are not outraged at one minor being cut.

You must not have had your coffee yet today?

Closest we get is this:

QuoteIn August 2023, Provost Sams started to work with the university's deans to create a way to evaluate a program's performance. It was modeled after the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's standards for majors, an A&M spokesperson said. The state classifies a bachelor's degree program as "low-producing" if it awards fewer than five degrees in a year and fewer than 25 degrees in five years. The state agency that oversees public higher education does not have a process for reviewing minors.

Using this system, A&M identified 52 minors and certificates to eliminate.

Yeah I read that. Again that program had only been around since 2022, kind of hard to award a four year degree in that time.

It's not going to be a military superpower anymore though, and there's going to be strife.

The lines of demarcation aren't as clear as in 1860.  That was the time to let go of the Confederacy and evolve into a functionning State.  But the US had to force them to stay.  And in the end, the Confederacy has risen again and taken over a good 2/3 of the country.

It's only a minor.

That being said however - exactly how much expense is there to a university to maintain a minor?  Isn't it just a matter of specifying that "graduating after completing X requirements gives you a minor"?
