It's not going to be a military superpower anymore though, and there's going to be strife.

The lines of demarcation aren't as clear as in 1860.  That was the time to let go of the Confederacy and evolve into a functionning State.  But the US had to force them to stay.  And in the end, the Confederacy has risen again and taken over a good 2/3 of the country. :sleep:

Exactly.  Eliminating a minor doesn't save any money, bar a trivial amount of administration.  This move looks like its designed purely to placate Texas A&M's archconservative alumni.  The school has been moving away from its paramilitary history, but not far enough, it seems.
