Quote from: Barrister on November 07, 2024, 04:56:37 PMJust as a reminder - Trump has now failed to stop the Ukraine war within 24 hour of being elected.

And yes he said he'd end it before even being sworn in.

Oh he'll end it, don't you worry. Just not in a way you'd be please with. On the plus side Moscow will get a nice new, government paid for, trump tower

The daily security briefings are being forwarded already.

That's a good idea, presumably the French to mainly provide the delivery system, though what about a Fighter-bomber version of the Avro Arrow?  :bowler:

That's kind of the definition of deterrence.

Some really interesting lessons to learn from the war in Ukraine:

Drones of all types dominate the battlefield now, though that will change as anti-drone systems are developed and fielded. But drones will be fielded at echelons down to the squad level.

Recon and attack helicopters are obsolete, their function can be duplicated more cost (and life) efficient by drones.

All current tube artillery is obsolete. It takes current tube artillery too long to relocate after firing and the combination of counter-battery fire and drones turns tube artillery into sitting ducks. Rheinmetall developed a 155mm arty with autoloader that can fire on the move, which would at least make it survivable. However, rocket arty is the future. I predict the US will develop 120mm rocket, with the effectiveness of 155 arty that can be fired from GMLRS/HIMARS, with a standard load consisting of 60/30 rockets. It could hit a sustained fire rate of 7 times of the most modern tube arty (at twice the range).

Munition stockpiles and production capabilities were woefully inadequate. Both need to increase to at least 20 times the prewar level

All vehicles need to have counter rocket and counter drone systems.

Tanks have become too heavy, weight should optimally reduced to under 50 tons maximum. Alternatively, we could ask potential adversaries to please build bridges that can handle a 70 ton Abrams tank. switching to a remote turret equipped with an autoloader would help.

Bn/Bde/Div HQs need to be based on mobile platforms. Static hq positions will simply be far too vulnerable.

More advanced breaching technologies are needed for combat engineers to penetrate through multi-layered defenses.

EW need to extended to echelons below the bde level for drone defense, as well as enlarged for broader offensive and defensive capabilities to account for the myriad modern electronic devises in existence.

Both visual and thermal stealth measures are needed for all vehicles to hinder the enemy's vision.

The Minsky Moment

The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

No, it's really like we're in late 2016 again.

Came to brag no doubt :P

Welcome back, just the same :D

Naah, I find political discussions tedious, particularly since the media has beclowned itself to such a degree that any discussion of politics in response to media reports are a complete waste of time.

Yes. Countries without nukes are free real-estate waiting to be taken in this new world

Of course the more nukes spread, the more likely a dumbass decides to use them.

I wouldn't be against Japan having nukes as well in the current climate.

The way things are going, humanity is fucked anyway. Not sure going out with a bang is going to be any worse than a whimper.

Seems Russia has gained a big morale boost from their victory in the US and has launched a big offensive. Ukrainian front line has possibly collapsed.
