The biggest concern is around what you are saying, people mistake what AI says is the answer as something that is infallibly correct

People having strong beliefs that false things are infallibly correct is not really a novel problem. 

Actually I think a equal problem will be more skepticism about obviously true things based on the theoretical possibility of AI manipulation.  It will be another arrow in the Conspiracy Theorist quiver.

... and that I think goes back to the accountability point.

If realistic but fake video is trivial to create, video evidence needs some sort of guarantor to be credible. "Yes I was there. That video shows what I saw also" statements from someone credible. Or - I suppose - in the court of law "yes, the chain of custody is that we obtained the video from the drive it was recorded to, that drive has no evidence of material being added toit, and the video has not been substituted since then - so we can rely on it as a recording of real events" type stuff.

So I mean that kind of evidence is already required in court in order to present video.  I can't just play a video without someone to authenticate it.

But as it is now, once the video is authenticated it tends to have much more value than a live witness.  It's one thing for a complainant to say "The Accused beat me", while it's another to have a video showing the Accused beating the complainant.  But if video becomes so easy to fake then suddenly the video has no more value than the live witness.

At least in terms of still images or chat I believe the only thing stopping it right now is limitations built into the AIs.

BB, I'd think that video would still have some value in underscoring the visceralness (or lack of same) in a way that's more effective than "he beat me viciously."

... but yeah, it would perhaps stop feeling more "real" if we become accustomed to question all videos.

... I'm not in the field, but my understanding is that it's not that hard to train AI. I guess it's just a matter of time before someone sets it up and markets it.

These language models will be extremely effective at scamming seniors at first and then the rest of us.

ChatGTP 4 is currently being trained on Icelandic, it even composed the other day a pretty good Hávamál-style verse on, ironically, the importance of small languages.

It's like no one watched the terminator movies. I mean that makes sense after the second one since their not worth watching, but the first two gave plenty of warnings.

You are correct that is not novel, but the fact that the answer is being given by AI gives the answer more validity in the minds of many, and there lies the danger.  The answer could be complete bullshit, but who you going to believe?  A supercomputer, or some "expert" after years of the right wing attacking experts?

Soon, I guess. However, it still has trouble generating hands. It will also be quite difficult for the first few AIs to generate penises. Especially being held by hands.

It could be now but for legalities.

This is part of what I mean by the insanity of generated content taking over.

Less in porn but consider mainstream media. No two people would consume the same things. Everyone would get stuff explicitly geared towards what it believes their personal tastes to be. With wide ranging results.

There are scary prospects in it for sure. Though they're less in the direction of evil AI conquers the world and more reality breaks down as we are overwhelmed with algorithmically generated fakes.

I agree. It will be a wonderful tool for dictators and populists everywhere and drive the susceptible parts of the population into deeper madness.
