No Liger? It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic.

That's odd. Wiki lists the Canadian lynx at around 20 lbs. The Eurasian lynx gets up to 60, but you'd be unlikely to have seen one of them.

I've never seen one in the wild, but allegedly they average about 20 pounds and are often described as being twice the size of housecats. Not really in the same league as Tigers. ;)

I hope for the cat's sake the above is incorrect, and that she was given to the appropriately trained personnel at a proper conservation facility. But I fucking doubt it.

Actually, I wonder if this is the same one:

Same name, although that could just be a common name (there's another one, or at least I think it's another one, named Nala that is being monitored by Cheetah Conservation Botswana) given to these things over there. Anyway, it's in Namibia, the thing is pretty comfortable with people, etc. That Sandfontein place is a protected area.

Dangerous Game Hunting has a great little article title, "Most Dangerous". Author is a very experienced Professional Hunter. Opening paragraph as follows;
QuoteOf all the big five (and dangerous seven) the Leopard is the smallest and most feared above all others by Professional Hunters (PH) throughout Africa. You are not likely to die from the wounds it inflicts, however, a long road to recovery from those wounds and infections, requiring extensive medical attention. Inflicting damage at an incredible rate of speed, it can and has wounded entire hunting parties w/o a shot being fired.
QuoteLeopard attacks account for 86% of all recorded PH, trackers, and clients injuries in Zimbabwe.
QuoteA wounded leopard follow-up is not something anyone should ever experience. If it has life left it will charge at some stage unexpectedly, silently, and with unbelievable speed from the thickest cover.

Cattle are dumb. If you fuck with a lion, all his brothers and sisters are going to come check out the scene.
If a lion attacks a cow the rest just watch.

You're full of it. Your article is about lions attacking sick, weak, or preadult elephants. That is hardly surprising or a feat for a large group of lions.
A quick survey of the net says that a six year old elephant will weigh 600 kilos, a ten year old will weigh 1200 kilos, a 15 year old 1600 kilos. Those are big animals, and the ability of Lions (typically 120-200 kilos) to kill them is still impressive.

QuoteAdult lions weigh, on average, 190 and 126 kg
in males and females, respectively (Smuts 1982;
Skinner & Smithers 1990), and adult elephant
males and females weigh six and four tonnes
respectively (Skinner & Smithers 1990), while the
subadults weigh less than half the weight of the
females. This ratio of between 1:10–15, is certainly
the largest predator to prey weight ratio known
among terrestrial mammals (e.g. Packer 1986).
Not true, humans also hunt elephants. (Not to mention whales, as you did specify land animals)

While true, it hardly seems a fair comparison. Humans are better than most animals at what they do, it doesn't mean that the ability is not impressive.
There is much to be learnt from beasts.
That doesn't really seem fair though, Tim.
It isn't a single lion going after an elephant. They're like a African street gang.

Jaron - That's what makes them better than Tigers. Tigers may be a little larger, but Lions are smarter.
I wish a pride would collectively spray Timmay, marking him as a moron.

Doesn't really matter which is coolest, they'll all disappear from the face of the planet within decades anyway.
Save your tears for animals whose existence doesn't involve slaughter.
Gotta go feed my cats. -_-

I would think an animal that has to hunt alone would be the smarter one. Lions don't need to be smart, just numerous.
Social animals are smarter than solitary ones, this is not controversial.
It is controversial because "smartness" is very subjective.
They may seem smarter to other social animals.
I just read tigers have bigger brains than lions. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Ortiz.
Lion. Many thousands of years as one of the most universal political and cultural symbols for power.

That's a blanket statement. Octopi are smarter than ants; they're probably smarter than lions as well. They are very asocial.

But social animals of one type are smarter than similar types that are solitary. Social insects are typically smarter than solitary ones, Lions are smarter than tigers, monkeys that live in large social groups are smarter than those that live alone.
That is a rather proactive claim on behalf of the Octopi, offer some proof.

They can learn how to swim. Ants can't. So there.
An octopus is smarter than Ortiz.

Go read a book from the last twenty years. Octopi can figure out mazes, traps, trick containers, etc.
Octopi are better than lions at predicting soccer games.

Don't really see how being extinct is relevant to it being the best. They, like many animals, went extinct because of circumstances completely out of their control.
