Poll
Question:
Which flag should the U.S. use if Puerto Rico becomes the 51st state.
Option 1: Flag Proposed by the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico
votes: 10
Option 2: Flag Proposed by the Army Institute of Heraldry
votes: 18
We might have had this poll before, but it seems to be lost to the ether.
So which do you like. I like the star pattern on the first, but I feel there's not enough blue. On the other hand choice two is boring.
A

Don't you have maps of the Caribbean to draw with Ottomans taking over the Dominican Republic or something?
A is best. Would really help me to feel like I live in the future.
B will be chosen.
How do you know, we've had some funky flag designs in the best.
I especially like the 26 star flag

People today have warped ideas about the importance of traditions (which may or may not actually be traditions) and don't like change in this sort of thing.
Also a 51 star flag would be a lot more potentially permanent than any of the earlier pre 20th century designs were seen as being.

Which state is the center star? :hmm:
Why, your state of course. ;)
I'm sure it was meant to not be representative of any particular state. However, Michigan was state 26, so maybe people thought of it as that.
Shouldn't the stars form a likeness of Obama? :showoff:
Neither.
A state of housekeepers and thieves doesn't deserve a star.

Expand blue on flag A, it would be perfect.
I prefer a nice even 50. I like Puerto Ricans but I see no upside to them becoming a state.
How about the idea of self governance that we seem so keen on?

Blue bock with a circle of stars within. It looks cool, but the blue is far too small.
We should just go back with a simple '76 with a circle of 13 stars on the blue field. Fuck counting states, go old school.

Duh. Of course. It may or may not ultimately be the right thing to do, but don't expect me to throw a friggin parade about it. And then of course there's the Timmy Taint.

Won't Federal contributions to the territory be reduced if it becomes a State? Isn't this a good thing?
On the subject:
I think B is the one you should go with. It looks just like the old one, so you can recycle them as nobody will bother to count the stars :P
Why go through a redesign when the liberals and Muslims are just gonna keep burning the old one?

As I understand it...
Federal contributions to PR would go up significantly. They would be entitled to a lot of entitlement programs they are not currently receiving.
However, PR residents would now have to pay federal income tax (they do not at present). So that's a significant new source of revenue as well.
What entitlement programs do they currently not get? I thought they got everything we do.

It's complicated, but apparently not, or at least not at the same levels.
I'm no expert though. Google it yourself.
Here's a really great rendition of a 51star circle pattern that I found on Something Awful.

If California would just hurry up and fall into the Pacific, we could admit Puerto Rico and still keep our current flag.

Of course. They're vastly different states. West Virginia is solidly red, while Virginia now leans ever-so-slightly blue.

Solar panels.
I calculated once if you covered Oklahoma in solar panels you could power the world. I think we should do it.
Cut the US into 50 equal states based on population and demographics, then give each state a set of professional sports teams. You'd have the East Coast Urban Douchebags versus the Rustbelt Whiny Poors.

Don't stop at Puerto Rico. Add another two states so you have 53. As a prime number, then you really would be "one nation, indivisible".

Guess the Republicans wished they hadn't split Virginia, as a unified state it would have have gone for Romney in the last election.
But then we wouldn't have West Virginia jokes, just Virginia ones. Boooring.
