So I had dinner at an In and Out Burger for the first time today... stopped at one in Ventura right off the PCH on my way up to Santa Barbara.
Was it good? Yes. Is it better than Five Guys? No, it's pretty much the same. I would say the fries are better at Five Guys but the burger was probably better at In and Out. I got a Double-Double animal style.
Also, I think the next town I hit was Oxnard and I'm not 100% sure but.... I think I saw a JiB from the highway. I should have stopped there for something in honor of my boy Jaron. :)
Yeah man, you at least have to hit the JiB if you're out west.
Never had five guys, but In n out is favorite burger chain.
@cal
In and out  pinche carpetbagger.
If you like In and Out, you'll like Five Guys and vice versa. A lot of similarities.
Money: I'm at a conference and most of the meals are provided... I'm taking a dude to The Habit at some point this week, which is another burger place that's more California-style (avocado on burgers, etc.) but maybe if we don't get sick of hamburgers we'll hit a JiB.

Did they do that California shit, where they serve it with the head looking up at you from the plate, too? Fucking hate that. Disconcerting.
True. When I lived in CA, they opened up this nice little fish restaurant and I got trout once. They left the head on, and I was very careful about eating it when I got near the head...I had squeezed a lemon on it and got a seed and panicked because I thought it was the eyeball. :P
Chinese dudes love fish served that way... but no, it was just a filet of red snapper with spinach and a little bowl of pinto/black bean stew.
Semi-related I had wendys for the first time a few weeks ago.
It was good.

It's like a Five Guys that started in the 1970s, I guess. It probably seems less awesome now since there are so many similar chains these days (Five Guys, Smashburger, The Habit, Homerun, etc.)
Alas, my days of fast food burgers are done.
I had a brief craving for a 1/4-pound bacon cheddar burger yesterday. I satisfied it with a stuffed chicken breast, instead.
Fries are my downfall. Specifically, fresh, hot, greasy fries covered in ketchup. :mmm:
I went to Wendy's a couple days ago. Got a Spicy Chicken Sandwich instead of a burger though. :mmm:
Fucking "Cook Out" in Charlotte was the best, bar none. I think they're only in the Carolinas, though, not sure.
It's a weird chain though (besides all the Bible stuff all over the cups and napkins, etc.) -- they don't seem to have a website: the only ones are "fan" websites.
Is there a list of all the Franchise Fast Food joints in the US?
With all the international exposure of Burger Kings & McD's you'd think they were the only 2 but you guys are throwing names out like they are beads on Mardi Gras.
Non-comprehensive list of burger joints off top of my head:
McDonalds
Burger King
Wendys
Hardees
JIB
Carls Jr
Whataburger
In N Out
Five Guys
Sonic
Krystal
White Castle
Checkers
The Varsity
The Heart Attack Grill(may just be one or two of those)
The other places people have said
That's not counting sit-down places which specialize in burgers like Fuddrucker's and Chili's. :D

Sadly we only have McD and BK (and a few Wendys) over here.
Yank food is very much on trend, in London, at least. Loads of bbq and high-end burger and hot dog places opening up. Proper fried chicken is the next big thing.
I wish Chick-Fil-Gay would open a franchise up north. KFC's got all the market to itself.
Bojangles is like Chick-fil-A where they replace the shitty food with the best god damn fast food fried chicken in history.
I tried Bojangles once and it wasn't that good. Also, it was traditional style fried chicken so more like KFC than Chick-fil-a.
A lot of Bojangles around here were bought up by Popeye's. Never really noticed a difference.
Most of the Arby's here have been converted to Popeye's too. I wonder if it's a thing.

Bojangles does both, actually. They do buckets of bone-in fried chicken ala KFC (and it's better than KFC) but for some reason most people think that is all they do. They also make fucking amazing biscuits, and boneless fried chicken that, when placed inside the biscuit becomes a "Cajun Filet Biscuit." Manna for discerrning Southerners everywhere.

I wonder if there's some cross-pollination with Bojangles and Popeye's--they've got good chicken, better than KFCs, but it's their biscuits that are worth fighting over.
Bojangles do sides like cajun rice and beans, etc?
Yup, they have "Cajun Pintos" and "Dirty Rice" (very similar to Popeyes Cajun Rice.) There aren't any Bojangles immediately in my area, there are some further north near D.C. and south toward Richmond, and then if you get into the Southwest part of the State and into North Carolina they are a lot more prominent. Popeyes is the bigger chain and more distributed, I've seen them in Ohio etc, never seen Bojangles any further outside the "old Confederacy" than the D.C. area.

McDonald's and Burger King are inedible in my opinion, at least their burgers. (McD's breakfast is weaksauce compared to Tim Horton's but it gets the job done.) Of the big fast food burger chains I think Wendy's and Hardee's stand out; I don't really consider Five Guys in that category yet as they're still a pretty small player.

Concur, except I do dig McD's burgers when they're fresh and done right. Unfortunately there's too much inconsistency from McD's to McD's, and on the time of day and shift. It's a complete gamble.
Wendy's does rock, though.
QuoteI don't really consider Five Guys in that category yet as they're still a pretty small player.
Until they get a drive-thru, they don't count. But they are good damned burgers. I put them in the same category as Steak n' Shakes rather than McDs/BK/etc.
MiM is heretic that must be burned at the stake.
I don't see the fascination the Internet has with Five Guys.

You have Timmy's in VA?
In any event, I prefer McD's breakfast menu to Tim Horton's (mind you - it is the only edible portion of McDonald's menu).
I'm not sure about in VA, definitely not near my house. But in this wasteland between D.C. and Richmond there are a lot of big chains we don't have. (You should see how happy the locals were when Chipotle came to town.)
I'm actually a pretty serious health food guy, so my knowledge of fast food isn't based on regular trips but my deep appreciation for junk food when I splurge.
Due to the nature of my job with ICE I travel a good bit though, and I know in at least an airport or two I go through regularly they have Tim's. I think at one point there used to be one in either Boston or New York near the hotel I normally stay at, but I think Tim Horton's is basically not viable in areas of deep Dunkin Donuts concentration so I think they pulled out of almost that entire region. I know they're still thick in Detroit and Columbus, though.
I believe I saw one in New York's Penn Station.
I actually like Egg McMuffins more than Tim's Sausage Breakfast sandwich.
Surprised to hear that Tim's has even made an impression in the States.
When Tim Horton's and Wendy's had their merger, a lot of markets here in the States had dual Wendy's/Tim Horton's shops open up together. I think the logic was, Wendy's had no breakfast business and Tim's is super strong there. You still see some of these stores, but a lot of them have disappeared after the companies split up--I think in part because in some markets Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks were just too entrenched. But in parts of the midwest for sure, where Dunkin never came on strong, Tim's is a pretty common sight.
A lot of the Tim/Wendy's dual stores still exist, but some got converted into Tim Horton's/Coldstone Creamery combo stores.
Quick look at their site suggests they never made it (or didn't last) out West. Also they list 18 in the New York metro area.
Not surprised they haven't made it to Maryland, it's not exactly a business-friendly state when it comes to establishing franchises. Hell, we only got our first Sonic less than two years ago.

There are several Tim/Wendy's combos in Canada. Whenever I go in one the Wendy's side has a slow but steady business, while the Tim's side invariably has a huge line-up, no matter what time of day.
I don't get the Canadian fascination with Tim's - or at least the Western Canadian fascination. I certainly didn't grow up with Tim's. I think it came west in the 90s or so. Heck Robin's Donuts is the chain I remember as a kid.
Besides - Tim's coffee isn't all that great, and they don't even make their donuts fresh anymore.
BB, it's a Canadian thing. Hell, it even goes thru Two Solitudes divide. It's the same here, any time of the day Tim is full. I live less then a 1km from one, it's crazy. I don't understand it, the food is crap & I don't drink coffee.
I always liked the Tim Horton's donuts, but I think I'm weird in that I never liked Krispy Kreme. I always thought they just made them insanely over-sweet, Tim's donuts hit a nicer balance.

I used to be on the Wendy's bandwagon, but at least all the Wendy's around here actually make the worst burgers. Seriously, I want to eat a beef burger, not a tasteless oil sponge. Don't have the option to try a Hardee's, and I've still never gotten around to trying out Five Guys, but since McDonald's burgers taste like crap (seriously, all I can taste is mustard and pickles), Burger King gets the win for me for making the only fast-food burger around that takes like the genuine article.
