Had a laugh when my wife asked me if she could get an iPhone as her next phone (I naturally provision all techology for the family).  I told her absolutely.  Then she excitedly asked me how soon and I told her a year & a half since I got her Galaxy S late last year.  She nearly broke into tears.

She has an iPad, so she'll be able to get by until then

Except it really isn't.

Apple is just a company that makes really great consumer electronics.  But that's it.

yeah right.

I have an ipad (3). I have bought it because when it comes to tablets, it looked to have the best hardware, and the best application coverage on the stuff that matters (boardgame conversions :P )

But an iphone? I mean, the iOS is nice enough but it is like Android made with a braindead monkey in mind as target customer. That has some plus points, and some minus points. And I don't care if Android copied the iOS. The point is that with an iphone you are not buying anything you couldnt buy for half, apart from the logo.

It used to be a world apart.  Nowadays a lot of competitors have caught up on everything except for maybe the Macbook Air.  A buddy of mine got the new one a couple weeks ago & showed it to me.  Pretty slick.  No fans and it boots up in like 5 seconds.

Putting Macs aside, and looking just at iPhone - you're completely wrong.  In fact there are numerous articles out there saying that because Apple used its enormous cash supplies several years ago, and the enormous quantities they buy in, they get their components (especialy the tricky stuff like touchscreens and batteries) at significant discounts to everyone else.

You can not in fact get the equivalent to an iPhone 4s at half the price.  Yes, you can buy various Android phones at half the price - but they won't have all of the hardware features.

And yes - nobody cares about aesthetics, in particular the aesthetics of packaging, like Apple does.

The phone market in the US is pretty well disconnected from the material cost of the phone.  Most of the cost is rolled up in the phone plan that you get forced into not the initial purchase price of the phone to the consumer, so it is quite possible you could get an equivalent Android phone at half the cost.  Hell I got an offer when I left my old phone company for any Android phone for free if I signed a two year contract.

Except form over function implies that they are sacrificing fuction in favour of form.  That isn't the case.

As an example - if you search google you can find a bunch of videos of people unboxing their apple product.  You don't see that for any other company.  Why?  Because no other company cares about the user experience of unboxing.

Yeah, I just typed unboxing into google and the first vid wasn't even apple.

Also, not sure what this metric tells us..

My wife just retired her iPhone  :hmm:

It was one of the earlier incarnations IIRC, she seems to have had it for ages. The new phone is a Samsung Galaxy thingie. Apparently it is much faster on the internet, the screen is certainly much bigger and clearer.

If they're correct that the next Apple iHipster will have a 4" screen, I'm glad I scored a 4s when I did.

Well yes - typically new phones are faster than old phones. :hmm:

I dunno about those Samsung Galaxy thingies - they seem monstrously huge.  Now obviously that makes reading them easier, but how well do they fit in a pocket?

Supposedly (since they're all rumours) the 4" screen will still be within the same physical dimensions.  They will just make the screen longer / take away bezel.

Indeed.  Why would I want a phone that doesn't fit in my pocket?  And why would I want a product made by Apple for homos?

Is this the thread where we come out of the Apple closet?

Until a few weeks ago I had pilloried Apple products and used to say that even if I received one for free I'd rarely, if ever, use it.

Then I received an iPad as a gift. I use it every day for hours at a time. I even use it to post on Languish.  :Embarrass:

I've become what I hate most.

iPads really are wonderful.  With little Tim being two I can no longer just sneak down to my office to read languish - but I can sit on the couch with the iPad.

It's a shame it's my wifes though.  I don't get to play with it much.

That's what I've got here.  It's pretty standard in the UK.

Couple of other thoughts are that form and function shouldn't be seen in competition.  I think packaging is a very good example of that.  We know how to contain things, we can make boxes.  I'd like it if instead of just doing that companies put some thought into them in terms of form, but also (to a far lesser extent) other things like sustainability.  Once we've got the function bit, the form aspect of making it easier and nicer should follow.  Too often it doesn't.

Also it makes me think of Ian Leslie's comment on the new CEO of Yahoo! who is a very successful engineer from Google.  People were saying about her 'geek cred' in the market, which is all very well.  He suggested that what Yahoo! needs isn't someone with geek cred but someone who can say 'no' to the geeks and realises that most people don't think like engineers.  Too often I think companies appeal to that without dumbing down sufficiently to make things easy to use for people like me who don't really care and won't spend any time learning how to use my phone.  I think that's the attractiveness of Apple's design.  I've got a few core apps I want to use (and no doubt I'll find more) and I want them to be easy and smooth.

Android's probably do this.  Blackberries do not.

Yeah, I thought that was interesting as well.  Simple fact is, engineers have a mentality and methodology that does not translate well to marketing.  Or dealing with other human beings that aren't thinking on their plane.

Can't fucking stand dealing with engineers, IT or otherwise.  WHY DONT WE DO THIS AND THIS AND THIS AND OH AND THIS

There is global warming and famines and whatever, and your experience is ruined by unexciting packaging?!!!!

Well, in the western world things are delivered in other things than old beet bags. I don't know about you gypsies, but for many civilized people the packaging is part of the experience.

For my part I love to unpack new electronic things, no matter if it's a new switch or a new phone. Apples packaging delivers something extra. The packaging in and of itself is not the reason I buy Apple, it is just one, rather unimportant, bonus.

I have unpackaged an apple product and I feel totally puzzled by what should it feel so special about it.

It's just a good packaging. That's all. Nothing magical.

I found it a bit too involved when opening up my iPod nano.

please tell me I misunderstood the comments here, that unpacking a product from it's box is part of the experience and should be in the focus of producers. God damn how consumerist BS is that?!!!!!oneoneone

Yeah an obnoxious part. When the technician took out my one of my first iPods to upgrade the software, I was all too happy to not have to fiddle with that crap myself.

I'd pay to watch a video of that guy's head being subjected to a .50 caliber test.

If I was paying for that, the video guy would be pretty far down The List.
