Title: Hugo Chavez - Dead as MRF (almost)
Post by: MadImmortalMan on May 30, 2012, 12:49:58 PM
Quote from: Dan Rather
"This reporter has been told that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive cancer that has 'entered the end stage.'  The information and the quote come from a highly respected source close to Chavez and who is in a position to know his medical condition and history. This source says the prognosis is dire and that Chavez is now not expected to live 'more than a couple of months at most.'  Chavez is running for re-election in Venezuela but several sources--including the one who revealed the exact kind of cancer-- have told me that they believe it is doubtful the dictator will live to see the results.

I didn't know Dan Rather was still working, but hey. (http://www.businessinsider.com/hugo-chavez-illness-dan-rather-2012-5#ixzz1wNOOfod2)

For people who don't need bogymen they certainly fixate on a bunch of them.

What is the flawed premise?  That Republicans didn't fixate on them?  I can't think of any other leader in Latin American besides Castro that Republicans have mentioned so much.

I was unaware that hate for Chavez existed.  I see him as a level 23 anti-American buffoon, useful for comedic relief and to help discredit all anti-Americans and all left-populists by association, and as a level 3 security threat because of his support for Colombian "revolutionaries."

Josephus: how do you trim a Google search to US media only in the last six hours?  First page of a plain vanilla search gives me one media story by the BBC.

That is a terrible comparison. Venezuela is a member of OPEC located not far from the US, is a medium sized country that was until recently one of the wealthiest parts of South America. I can tell you at a high level what is going on in the major Latin American countries (Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil) but I don't keep up as much with small countries like Costa Rica, Paraguay, or Gautemala.

Also, Chavez has effectively destroyed his country's economy and made life very difficult for multinationals there. He has also tried to create an anti American coalition and shown a willingness to fund countries that take that line. Yeah he is a buffoon and has failed, but sometimes people follow buffoons, and he has had some successes.

I just thought he was another South American populist dictator.  The only reason he was hated was because of his nonsense in Columbia...well ok actually it was because Martim had a boner about him for a while and was really annoying about it.

I dislike him simply for destroying Venezuela.  But lots of South American leaders have destroyed their countries.
