Title: Disney World AAR
Post by: Caliga on April 20, 2012, 02:43:36 PM
Cal is off for a week.  I'll probably be online to make sure nobody misbehaves off and on... it was necessary to take my work laptop + aircard due to nonstop acquisition activity. :glare:

DISNEY WORLD AAR
Part I: The Ride Report

Rides Cal went on more than once:
Star Tours @ Hollywood Studios - six times
Soarin' @ Epcot - twice
Kilimanjaro Safaris @ Animal Kingdom - twice
The Haunted Mansion @ Magic Kingdom - twice

Other awesome rides I would have ridden multiple times if I'd had more time:
Kali River Rapids @ Animal Kingdom
DINOSAUR @ Animal Kingdom
Mission: Space @ Epcot
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin @ Magic Kingdom

Good rides not worth doing multiple times:
Carousel of Progress @ Magic Kingdom
It's A Small World @ Magic Kingdom..... for some strange reason :hmm:
Pirates of the Caribbean @ Magic Kingdom
Jungle Cruise @ Magic Kingdom
Spaceship Earth @ Epcot
Universe of Energy @ Epcot
Living With The Land @ Epcot
Maelstrom @ Epcot Norway Pavilion
Toy Story Midway Mania @ Hollywood Studios
Triceratop Spin @ Animal Kingdom
Tomorrowland Transit Authority Peoplemover @ Magic Kingdom

Rides that ranged from 'lame' to 'really suck and wtf was Disney thinking':

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh @ Magic Kingdom (Disney replaced Mr. Toad's Wild Ride with THIS pile of dogshit?!? :ultra: )
Peter Pan's Flight @ Magic Kindgom (snoozefest)
Stitch's Great Escape! @ Magic Kingdom (this ride caused me both physical pain and mental distress due to its extreme suckitude  )
Journey into Imagination with Figment @ Epcot (lame except for the Eric Idle cameo)
The Seas With Nemo and Friends @ Epcot (boring unless you're 2 years old)
Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros @ Epcot Mexico Pavilion (I appreciated the racist jokes about Mexico, but otherwise dull)
The Great Movie Ride @ Hollywood Studios (should have been cooler, but fell flat somehow)
Studio Backlot Tour @ Hollywood Studios (parts of this were neat, but there was too much downtime and driving through the Disney World dressmakers' shop wasn't as cool as you might think )
Snow White's Scary Adventures @ Magic Kingdom (baby shit)

Rides not ridden by Cal due to being a pussy:
Space Mountain @ Magic Kingdom
Rockin' Rollercoaster @ Hollywood Studios
Expedition Everest @ Animal Kingdom
Primeval Whirl @ Animal Kingdom
Splash Mountain @ Magic Kingdom

I've been informed of this.  And apparently the reverse holds true as well.

She was there in the 90s (whereas I was there in the 80s), and she hates you for dissing the Peter Pan ride and the Winnie the Pooh thing.  I just question why you were afraid of Space Mountain.  Isn't it just a fairly tame roller coaster in the dark?
Title: Re: Disney World AAR

I was really shocked by how differently I felt about Magic Kingdom compared to the last time I visited. The last time I was there was 1993, so I was about 18, and I had so many fond memories of Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion... I don't know if it's because we front-loaded all the "grownup" parks or what, but my overall reaction to Magic Kingdom this time was just "meh", except for the fireworks spectacular at the end. That was probably the most "magical" part of the trip for me... but I didn't feel any real desire to ride anything in MK more than once, or to go back a second day.

He did ride the Dinosaur! ride with me, and that thing was crazy. I am certain that we'd have all been thrown from the vehicle if it wasn't for the lap bar/belt. It was so intense that my legs were all trembly after. It seems that Disney is moving more and more toward simulator rides. And why not, I guess... no track to maintain, total immersion...

DISNEY WORLD AAR
Part II: The Food Report

The Magic Kingdom
Cosmic Ray's Starlight Café (Tomorrowland): I had a bacon cheeseburger with fries.  Meh.

Tomorrowland Terrace (Tomorrowland):  Princesca got us this thing where you got to watch the closing ceremony light show and fireworks here plus a dessert buffet.  The buffet had some neat stuff on it (little cheesecakes, apple pie tarts), but nothing remarkable.

Pinocchio Village Haus (Fantasyland):  Everybody said this place sucks, but I got a personal pepperoni pizza here and it was actually pretty good.

Tiki Juice Bar (Adventureland):  Princesca and I split this thing called a Dole Whip from there.  Basically, it's soft-serve pineapple ice cream.  I liked it.

Epcot
Akershus Royal Banquet Hall (Norway Pavilion):  Breakfast buffet with the Princesses (for the niece).  Aside from the afortmentioned ghastly lutefisk, they had bacon, sausage, and eggs for the picky yet fat American crowd, but I mostly ate a continental-style breakfast of pastries with jams (lingonberry and cloudberry), smoked salmon, and salami slices, all of which was very good.

Kringla Bakeri og Kafe (Norway Pavilion):  Princesca and I spilt a skolebrød.  Delicious.

No-name beer stand (Germany):  I had a pint of Pilsner and a pint of Oktoberfest.  The Oktoberfest was great but the Pilsner kinda sucked... it was way too hoppy. :yuk:  I pefer pilsners that are really light on the hops.

No-name junk food stand (Japan):  Princesca and I split a nectarine kakigori.  Also delicious, but she forgot to get the condensed milk poured on it so I fear I didn't get the whole kakigori experience. :(

Tangerine Cafe (Morocco):  Had dinner here one night; I got chicken shawarma with couscous, hummus, and flatbread and Princesca got the lamb shawarma plate.  Thought it was great, though Princesca felt that the dudes working there were really rude so she didn't like it as much.

Boulangerie Pâtisserie (France):  Ate lunch here.  I had a ham and cheese baguette, Princesca had a turkey and brie baguette, and we split a strawberry tart.  Simple but delicious... one of my favorite meals of the trip.

Hollywood Studios
Starring Rolls Cafe:  Ate lunch here.  I had a turkey sammich with swiss on focaccia.  Forget what Princesca had (maybe the same thing).  We split this thing called a Butterfinger Cupcake afterward, which is like a cupcake with crushed Butterfinger junk on top and frosting of some sort between that and the (chocolate) cupcake.  Twas good.

Animal Kingdom
some snack cart:  Princesca got a jalapeno soft pretzel, which was fucking awesome.  We gave a piece to my niece and she spit it out and was trying to brush the burny off of her tongue.  I wish I took a picture of that.

Flame Tree BBQ:  Had a pulled pork sandwich with fries.  It was ok but definitely nothing memorable to someone who's got better BBQ places in nearby gas stations. :showoff:

Yak and Yeti's:  I got beef lo mein and Princesca got honey chicken.  My lo mein was good but she didn't like the chicken very much.  I was kind of annoyed that a place in an Indian-themed section of the park didn't have any curry dishes. :glare:

Downtown Disney
The Earl of Sandwich:  I got a Hawaiian BBQ sandwich (basically, turkey and ham with pineapple slices and BBQ sauce).  Not bad.  Princesca got a roast beef and cheddar with horseradish sandwich--hers was better than mine IMO.

Goofy's Candy Company:  Princesca bought a bunch of shit here for her co-workers.  I settled for some walnut fudge (which wasn't anything noteworthy).

French Quarter Resort
We went here as part of our effort to scout out possible hotels to stay at when we next return and don't have the fucking poors with us, and thus don't have to stay at a 'value' resort.  Since we got there around dinnertime it made sense to eat there, also.  We got chicken jambalaya and cornbread from their food court.  Both were good but the cornbread was 'Yankee' cornbread.... the sweet kind that is more like a cake than real southern cornbread.  I like this variety of cornbread but much prefer the real stuff you cook in a skillet.  We also got beignets for dessert.... they were good, but not as good as Cafe du Monde's beignets.

Animal Kingdom Lodge
Jiko:  This is one of Disney's signature restaurants and Princesca made us reservations here six months in advance.  It's an African-themed restaurant where the dishes are mostly not quite African, but do have African influences worked into them.  They served us multigrain breads with a delicious tandoori butter, and then we ordered two appetizers--a wild boar fricassee thing on a bed of mealie pap that was outstanding, and a flatbread (kind of reminded me of a fried injera) with arugula, steak tartare, and some sort of cheese smeared on top.  For my main course I had a Gulf shrimp curry that was amazing--easily the best shrimp dish I've ever had.  It was seasoned with berebere lemongrass and served on a bed of coconut basmati.  Princesca got a filet mignon with some sort of truffle mac and cheese that's not on the menu anymore, but they still make it on request.  For dessert I had a berry cheesecake slice and she had some sort of peanut butter tart thing.  I had a South African chardonnay and she had some sort of blended South African red (all of the wines at this place are South African).  I don't think I'd ever had South African wine before and based on these two samples was not especially impressed, but they weren't bad or anything.  We also had Kenyan pressed coffee for dessert, which was extremely strong... just the way I like it.

Contemporary Resort
Chef Mickey's:  We also went here for my niece... they have a buffet and a bunch of Disney toons come around dressed as chefs to mingle with the kids.  I can't remember most of what I ate here but I did have a pork and rice thing that was really good.

And why not, I guess... no track to maintain, total immersion...
...no glasses to be dislodged and lost forever... etc. etc. etc.

I was there in 1975, at 5 years old.  I remember the glass bottom of the ship for the Pirates of the Carribean, and some house that you walked through that was upside down.

Of course, being 5, I was a lot more charged over the Pan Am flight.  I got a Captain's Wings pin for being such a good crew member.  :smarty:

I don't have any problem at all with the simulators, and not in terms of motion sickness, etc. with the roller coasters.  The lame thing is that I have a pair of those things you clip to your glasses to wear around the back of your head/neck to keep them from falling off--which I got for my boat--but I left them on my sunglasses which I left in my car in Kentucky.  We tried to find another pair in one of the Disney gift shops, but couldn't.  I was surprised that they don't carry them. :hmm:

DISNEY WORLD AAR
Part III: The Confederate Flag Report

Confederate Flags Spotted
1.  50+ foot tall flagpole sporting the Stars and Bars outside of Lake City, Florida on I-75
2.  50+ foot tall flagpole sporting the Stars and Bars outside of Tifton, Georgia on I-75
3.  I also saw a few cars with Confederate flag bumper stickers in Florida (oddly, one in Celebration right outside Disney World) and one somewhere in south Georgia.

What's interesting about this trip is that I saw fewer Confederate flags in South Carolina--where I actually saw zero--than in south Georgia and Florida.  I knew that Florida Crackers were extremely Southern in orientation... but moreso than South Carolinians? :hmm:

Part IIIa:  The I-75 'Spa' Report
I noticed billboards for lots of 'Spas' (TRUCKERS WELCOME!) on I-75 between Valdosta and Macon, Georgia.  These Spas seem to be staffed by sexy ladies in lingerie and bikinis.  Princesca asked if she could stop in and get a manicure at one of them.  I told her I didn't think so.  In what may or may not be a coincidence, the exit(s) that led to these spas often led to sex shops (WE HAVE TOYS AND DVDS!) as well. :)

My mother took my sister and me on an ill-fated trip to Disney World as kids.  We got separated from her in a crowd and got taken to the lost kids holding pen while she got to run through every child abduction scenario in her mind for a couple of hours.  My sister whined every time we had to wait on line for more than 10 minutes.  I behaved like a nutjob and was seized with fear about going on almost any ride.  Although, like Cal, I did love that Star Wars motion simulator.  :)  Driving back to Tampa, the car went off the road in a huge thunderstorm.

The most pleasant memory is probably my youthful surprise at seeing so many guys sporting rattails.  :) Oh, and eating one of those massive Chipwich things, even though it was probably freaking 12 dollars or something.

There's one of those right outside of Gainesville. It's called Cafe Risque. It's a strip club combined with a sex shop combined with trucker showers combined with a restaurant. I approve of this thread (but not on the pussification of american men that do not ride the rides). My 7 year old daughter has ridden everything she is allowed to at least once, including Tower of Terror and liked it.  :P

To anyone that cares:
We go to WDW 1 or 2 times a year, we are DVC members. If you need any info on WDW or Disney Cruise, please contact capturedfairy.

The area around Disney is actually one of the few in the state that doesn't have strip clubs. Or any gambling either. And Disney spends a crap load of money lobbying against expanding gambling in the state legislature. A multinational gambling corporation was going to spend something like $4 billion on a casino/convention center in Miami contingent on the expansion of legalized gambling, but the Legislature didn't approve it based on part on Disney's lobbying.

Hi Ide and everyone :) I had to pop in and read Cal's AARs.

Lusti - is DVC a good deal? I thought it was a timeshare and I run from those in terra.  But I seem to know a number of smart people who are members, so I'm starting to wonder if maybe there's something to it... or different about it...
