Title: What's your dream pet

What animal would you like to own as a pet if money, time, space and all that jazz was not a problem. No fictional animals, no animals that went extinct before the 20th century.

I would like an Irish Wolfhound.

Short lifespan.

I wouldn't trade my current dog for any other dog, even when he is a pain in the ass.

Our cat really is the perfect pet - she takes care of herself mostly, doesn't wreck our stuff, is affectionate and playful.

Only drawback is she enjoys playing Hannibal Lecter with the mice outside.

With your cabins in the woods and stuff you really need a larger pet than that Malthus.

When you have a kid you do not have time to bother with pets.

Anyways, I don't get why one would have a "dream pet".  Dream implies it is unattainable.  But since Tim has excluded the pets that are truly impossible, any remaining pet is fairly attainable.  Even some very exclusive dog breeds, or horses, cost an amount of money that is certainly possible if one really values a certain pet.

Thats a long way of saying that my two dogs and a cat are my dream pets, because they are the pets I wanted to get, and I have.  Why would I dream about a, say, Irish Setter, and not get one?

A dog requires too much attention, it isn't a practical pet for someone who works at a professional type job full-time. My wife isn't as interested in pets and my son is too young to take care of one.

It isn't really fair to the dog to get one and not give it the attention it requires.

My cats are affectionate toward everyone, as long as they can sense I'm affectionate toward the person, otherwise they growl and are mean.

My cat is terribly affectionate towards everyone, including our dogs.

Except for one exception - my brother's maltese.  It is as if my cat, who has always been the smallest thing he knows (he's small for a cat to begin with), having finally discovered someone smaller than him, has realized he can actually be mean to something and get away with it.

lol no. He was in the portuguese navy during the colonial wars. He found a baby monkey and kept it as a pet. Even brought it back to lisbon. He left it behind when he came to canada and it died a few years later (and or was sold he's not too sure)

Cats are the first priority.  I want some beautiful purebreds. A Maine Coon to lighten the mood, a Siamese for my sins, a Persian for aesthetic contemplation, a hairless Sphynx to contemplate motality.  And then round out the gang with a half-dozen or so American shorthair mutts from the street.  All male, definitely.

Dogs are OK but I don't want much to do with them.  Maybe a Doberman in memoriam of my grandmother and to make sure that the USPS employees are really earning their "'extravagant" salaries.

Next, a bunch of peacocks in the back lot if I have it, to tip my hat to F. O'Connor.  And if I lived in Florida, definitely some flamingos.  No other birds interest me except owls, but they are illegal to have as household pets.  :(

Fish are tedious.  Ferrets are disgusting.  Gerbils, hamsters, etc. even more so.   My experience watching others is that rabbits suck as pets.

Then maybe a Xanax-addled chimpanzee with the strength and disposition of Mike Tyson...  :hmm:

I have the dream setup as far as I'm concerned. All the neighbourhood cats hang out in my yard sometimes, also a lot of cool dogs come in my store. I clean up after none of them, but get to give treats, pets etc to said dogs, cats. Other animals should not be "pets' .... dogs, cats only.

A long time ago, when the earth was green
and there was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen,
and they run around free while the world was bein' born,
and the lovliest of all was the Unicorn.

There was green alligators and long-neck geese.
There was humpy bumpy camels and chimpanzees.
There was catsandratsandelephants, but sure as you're born
the lovliest of all was the Unicorn.

One of my dogs is a Rhodesian cross - his mother was a purebred who got out one day.

He's a fine dog, but I don't see the appeal of a purebred.
