wow, tuesday thread!

I'm guessing my games will be Buffalo at Cincinnati & New England at Oakland. I'm unsure which Fox  game I'll get, whatever is the National broadcast is.

Well, I get all of the games courtesy of Sunday Ticket, but the Big Game is on Sunday Night.  The Jets are going to get beaten down.

My predictions:
Buffalo and Detroit both go to 4-0 .
Pittsburgh loses 2 more offensive linemen and start recruiting for fill-ins at the concession stands at halftime, and lose to Houston.
The Ravens will take advantage of NY's offensive line issues, corkscrew Dirty Sanchez into the dirt, and pile it on the Jets simply out of general principle.

I don't think I've ever said that before but I'd like to see a Detroit game this year. Maybe I'll take the day off on American Thanksgiving to be sure.

Dan-O is on an NFL team once more!

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d822a0142/article/colts-opt-for-orlovsky-over-croyle-after-workout-of-qbs?module=HP11_headline_stack

QuoteThe Indianapolis Colts have agreed to terms with free-agent quarterback Dan Orlovsky, according to a league source.

With starting quarterback Kerry Collins battling concussion-like symptoms following Sunday night's 23-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Colts auditioned Orlovsky and ex-Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle on Tuesday, the Indianapolis Star reported.

While neither signal-caller boasts an impressive resume, Orlovsky had the inside edge on the basis of a few weeks spent in the Colts' system during the preseason. Orlovsky was among the Colts' final cuts when they trimmed their roster down to 53, but now he might be in the mix for the starting spot in Week 4.

There's no telling if coach Jim Caldwell believes Collins is the man for the job anymore -- concussion or no concussion -- and Curtis Painter was uneven during the second half against the Steelers, completing 5 of 11 passes for 60 yards.

Orlovsky has thrown for 1,679 yards and eight touchdowns to eight interceptions in 13 career games.

Wooo!

Nah, I remember them making the playoffs pretty frequently in the 90's, so they weren't bad then.  Then Barry Sanders retired and Matt Millen showed up and....wow.

Edit:  Oh hey, reading their wikipedia article, they even went 9-7 without Sanders (just missed the playoffs then) the year before Millen began destroying them.

My years at Languish - and these threads - has given me an affinity for the Ravens.

I won't pretend to know much, or to be a "true fan" or anything dumb like that... but when I'm waiting at an American airport or passing through a sport bar or am anywhere else with an NFL game on the big screen and it turns out the Ravens are playing, that's the team whose victories I cheer and whose losses I regret.

Hell... I was at a British flavoured pub during the playoffs last season and was watching the Ravens when the waitress changed the game to the world's strongest man competition or something... and I made her switch it back and was actually offended that she'd changed it to begin with.

So yeah... please keep up the good work in these threads

I too realized how glorious the Ravens defense was because of this board.  Think I hopped on their defensive bandwagon back in 04/05.  I don't brag about the offense, or get too excited when the defense is off the field even after all these years, though.   :P

Good show, my friend.  ;)

Just remember, you're rooting for a team whose city uses it as their instrument of vengeance upon this earth against a league for past wrongs too many to mention, on so many levels it reaches Greek proportions.  A team the rest of the league loves to hate, in both open contempt and hidden subterfuge.  And yet, it cannot defeat it, for its very existence is a victory.

In time, you too will see what the Ravens truly are:  the team the league created, born of its own Promethean hubris, one it cannot control or evade, and there will be a reckoning.  They are Shelley's team.

Welcome to the fight.

And so the volleys begin:

QuoteThe New York Jets coach and former Ravens defensive coordinator is blessed with a colorful personality that lends itself to sound bites and quotes. So it's not shocking that when a reporter told Ryan during his conference call with Baltimore media Wednesday morning that the Ravens are 1-0 against the Jets under Ryan, the coach responded with a shot across the bow.

"We have not beat them since I've been here, that's for sure," he said. "You can throw in the preseason game, too, if you want. That's exactly right. Now I will say this: we all talk about it, but I was there 10 years, and I've got a ton of friends there and the utmost respect for them and all that. But the fact of the matter is, we all said we were going to meet in the AFC championship game. Now, we haven't won the AFC championship game, but we've got there two years in a row. The Ravens haven't. So you can throw that one right back at them as well."

QuoteRay Lewis was then informed of Ryan's earlier response in the morning to a question about being 0-1 against the Ravens. Ryan pointed out that the Jets have advanced to the AFC championship in each of the last two seasons but are still waiting for the Ravens to meet them there.

"Wow. Yeah, the only response I could ever have for that is he was sitting in the same place I was sitting: watching the Super Bowl," Lewis said.

Sunday night will be beautiful.

But they've generally been successful (though never winning the Big Game) which makes them a fun team to root for.  Plus most years they get a couple of guaranteed wins against the Lions.

QuoteAlleged Vince Young impersonator held, pending extradition decision
P.G. County man used Vince Young's name to con woman out of $2,500, police say

By Keith L. Alexander, The Washington Post

The Prince George's County man authorities said impersonated backup Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vince Young and took $2,500 from a woman was ordered held in D.C. jail Thursday while Texas authorities decide whether to send for him.

D.C. Superior Court Magistrate Judge Karen Howze ordered Stephan A. Pittman, 33, of Fort Washington, held through Tuesday, when Texas authorities are to decide whether to extradite him on charges that he violated the terms of his probation in connection with a 2009 sexual assault in Dallas.

If Texas officials do not extradite Pittman, another hearing will be held Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court. In that case, Howze ordered, Pittman would be released on the conditions that he undergo drug and alcohol treatment, keep off the streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and stay away from the alleged victim and the 200 block of I St. SW.

Each time the judge asked Pittman whether he understood the conditions of the release, he replied, "Yes ma'am."

Pittman, who according to court records stands 6-feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 210 pounds — the same height at which the Eagles list Young, but several pounds lighter — was charged with first-degree felony fraud in connection with a June 9 interaction in which he allegedly told a District woman he met online that he was Young and wanted the woman to become involved with his foundation.

During a subsequent in-person meeting, Pittman allegedly told the woman the foundation would provide shoes and clothing to children in the victim's community. He asked her to donate $5,000, according to court records, promising her a salary for three years and donations to children in her neighborhood.

The woman told Pittman she did not have $5,000, according to court documents, and Pittman then asked for $2,500. The two wrote up an agreement, authorities said, and the woman gave Pittman the money.

Sometime later, according to authorities, the victim tried to contact Pittman but was unable to reach him. When she called a representative for Young, she was told that the man she met was not Young. Pittman was arrested Sept. 23 in Temple Hills in Prince George's County.

Besides, what the fuck do you know, you're the Brown's family lapdog.  That makes you a de facto extension of the league itself.  Tagliabuelover.

Yeah they still have him, he's the returner right here, but he's wildly inconsistent as a WR, unfortunately.

Edit:  By inconsistent, I mean he'll go make some hilariously difficult circus catch, but then let the next one hit him in the numbers, bounce up, and get picked off, if you know what I'm saying.  I don't get into watching them so much that I can comment on his route running and such.

Well, fortunately this year seems to be the year of the tight end, and Daniels is a stud.  At least they have a quality downfield option without Johnson.

Still, I hope Johnson isn't hurt bad, and that it's just a hamstring he can come back from next week or so.

Yeah Daniels is basically their #2.  An interesting thing they have now that Leach is gone is James Casey, who they moved to "fullback" from TE to get him on the field.  He doesn't bulldoze guys like Leach, but he's a much better pass catcher.

There's Jacoby Jones with a DB blanketing him.  Not really a big fan of that playcall there, going deep like that when you only need 6 yards.

My wife made me laugh my ass off on the 3rd down play of Dallas' last drive.   Dallas had a receiver way off by himself on the strong side, with no Lion defender anywhere near.  As the ball is snapped, I'm freaking out and yelling 'Who's got that guy!'.  And at the very moment that the pass bounces off his hands, she says 'It doesn't really matter, does it?'.  I found her lack of faith in Romo to be amusing.

Monday Night Football isn't anywhere near as prestigious as it used to be.  Especially since they freaked out and got rid of the Monday Night Football song.

This was supposed to be "Peyton Manning," not "Tampa Bay."

Then have the game in Indianapolis.

It's because they schedule the MNF games way in advance, and they can't flex them, so the matchups sometimes suck like this one.

Jesus did Painter just almost throw a pick already?

Why does the location make a difference?

Yeah, but the best games are also scheduled well in advance for Sunday Night, whereas five years ago they would have been on Monday.

No, that was just Garcon with a drop.  Garcon sucks.

Painter actually looks pretty good on his first few passes.

The teams involved are much, much, much more important than the location.

Oh okay.  I looked up and saw a Bucs player with the ball in his hands.

It does. They have no flexibility in their schedule because it is done in advance so atleast have the games in interesting football stadium/city. Not some place that hadn't sell out in almost 2 years.

Oof.  Painter with the turnover.

Indianapolis isn't interesting.  At least no more so than Tampa when it comes to watching a football game on TV.

Actually, no, Indy doesn't have a pirate ship.  Tampa is better.

Edit:  Okay I'm the worst Rangers fan ever.  The only reason I knew they even played tonight, let alone won, was because the MNF guys mentioned it twice now.

I put that on Addai.    And right there, the other back totally blew his block, and Painter got annihilated.  The Colts really need to work on their protection.

But even then, the pirate ship is a gimmick.  Really, the stadiums are all pretty much the same when you're watching it on TV.

Wow the Colts got lucky there.  Nice tackling, guys.

Yeah, Donald Brown.  That was terrible.

True, but it's slightly better than no gimmick.

Why did Morris just throw a challenge flag?  What is he even wanting to challenege?

But Peyton Manning is a travelling gimmick.  He takes his stupidly long pre-snap shit and gigantic dome on the road with him.   Kerry Collins also drinks on the sidelines no matter where he is as well.

#1 total defense in the NFL (in terms of yards allowed per game): Bengals
And that's almost a real stat, now that the Bengals have played one team that isn't totally worthless. :P

I know-- and #1 anything just 1/4 the way through the season is not something to hang your hat on.  But the defense (and team as a whole) seems to have benefited by dropping some bigger names/egos and going for depth instead.  Also helped to move Maualuga to MLB.  With Fitzgerald (Ravens LB coach from 04 to 07) coaching him he seems to be on the right track.

What I think *is* pretty telling is that the Bengals, Steelers, and Ravens are the top 3 NFL defenses in yards allowed per game.  Cleveland is #9.  If one team in the division figures out how to have a consistently decent offense, watch out.

Another reason to like the Ravens.  Their D-Coordinator is Chuck Pagano, who played at Wyoming.  Good show, that indeed.
