Title: Which dogs can be left alone for 10-12 hours (if any)?
Post by: Martinus on September 26, 2011, 04:44:44 PM
So, I'm thinking of getting a dog but my lifestyle (working 10-12 hours per day) means I may not have enough time for him and would hate to make him suffer. Are there any races of dogs that can stay at the apartment alone for extended periods of time like that without going all sad, depressed and angry?

Maybe if you worked harder and didn't post on Languish so much you could do your job in eight hours or less a day.

Why not adopt a South East Asian baby instead? Have to get in on the fad whilst it lasts.

Any dog that is well-trained.  However, I would exclude Labradors, Retrievers, Setters, Spaniels, etc.  Pit Bulls are a good choice.

Not always true.  Cats can get lonely too (especially Siamese).

Yeah, my sis did this.  Got a big black lab, tore the shit out of her place.  I don't think she's every paid for the damages.  She finally gave the dog away when she found that it growled at her daughter.  I was proud of her for doing that.

Agreed.  Get two cats - sisters or mother and daughter work - or one can get lonely if you're having it as a house cat.

My families had a number of dogs (admittedly mostly border collies) and I don't think any of them could be left alone for that long.  It's just cruel.

Edit:  Incidentally on the cat front go to a home and get a pair of old dears.  We used to have a (very) elderly mother and daughter pair (the daughter, sadly, was albino, blind, deaf and forgetful).  They're good housepets for small flats and you're doing something good giving a nice home to them - plus they're far, far less likely to leave dead vermin around the house.

Big dogs.

Actually, rescued greyhounds are known to be good apartment/condo dogs;  larger bowels and bladders as a larger dog, but former racing greyhounds (after 3 or so years of service) are used to long, extended down times in cages between bouts of exercise, and the requisite good temperment and patience that needed in that environment that isn't subject to abandonment issues.

But for you, I'd skip it.  As a fag, you're too selfish to care for another living creature.

Bingo.  It's not a gay thing, my brother is very good with animals and keeps two dogs.  Marty is self centered though.  He's probably getting a dog to impress one his boyfriends or something.  It's not like a bike where you can get it, glow in the admiration of your lover, and then put it away.  It's a living creature.  I wouldn't trust Marty with a goldfish.

No, Marty's just figured out that the only thing that gets more attention at the cafe than being seen using an Apple(tm) product is being seen using an Apple(tm) product with a dog tied to the table leg.

We've left our dog alone for up to about 12 hours before, and he seemed ok with it.  I mean, I'm sure he doesn't like it, but he didn't go nuts or shit all over the place or anything.  He just slept in his crate.  He's allegedly half-Boxer and half-other stuff (supposedly German Shepherd and Labrador).

The late Brodie and current Louis Anton had/have an Adventure Dog person, she takes dogs in her van to the Senator Warren Magnuson State Park.

The Park has a huge off leash area, and the gaggle of Fidos get to run wild for two hours.  Solved the 11-12 hour thing nicely.

Thats what any animal trainer will do.

If you keep them in too large a space, they'll designate a part of it as the bathroom.  If it's a crate the right size for them (big enough to stand, but not big enough to walk around) they won't.

Of course you have to give them lots of attention and exercise afterwards.

I`d have to say a cat would be more fitting for your lifestyle. Or a set of guinea pigs.

Leaving a dog alone so long sucks. I`ve done it on very rare occasions with mine and she generally isn`t very happy about it, and is dying for the loo.

Seriously, I am not as shallow to want a dog as a fashion accessory.

When I was growing up, we always had a dog or two (my parents own a big house with a garden so that was never an issue), and I miss having a dog waiting for me at home when I get back in the evening.

I guess I could like a cat, but they always feel like a poor substitute for a dog to me.

Seriously do not get a dog or even a cat with the amount of time you're about every day. It's cruel. Two cats at a pinch to keep each other company, but if you don't like them meh.

Don't forget to add in long walks before and after work which will be in the dark and probably snow before too long. Besides, you don't seem like the type to want to clean up poop, whether in a litter tray, on the pavement or on your bed.

No. I think that once he obtained a wife, the emotional benefits of having a tribe of gerbils living in your second floor ensuite ment less to him.

Of course, the fact that he had said tribe could explain why he had to import a wife ...

Caring for a colony of animals is a noble calling.

Like, you call it a "zoo" and charge admission, and you're a regular working joe.  You do it because it's a fun hobby and you like animals and don't wish to see them endangered in their natural state and you're an eccentric, at best.  People are just fucked up in their mores.

On the other hand, gerbils are nasty little beasts.

My brother had gerbils.  Turns out the little buggers are cannibals.  Also the family dog killed one of them (simply by putting a paw on one.  I have Gerbil must have had a heart attack or something when it happened).  I don't recall what happened to the rest of them.  Hated the little critters.  They stunk.

Yeah Marty, dogs are pretty high maintenance.

Getting a puppy and leaving it at home for 10-12 hours a day will definitely mess it, and your home, up. Now, if your office allows you to bring the dog with you, if you arrange doggie day care or a dog walker when you're away it's doable. But it will still take up a lot of your time and attention.

The unconditional affection is pretty nice though.

I'd suggest reading a few books on how to raise a dog before making the decision. To give you some ideas about the effort and kind of problems you're likely to encounter.

If you do decide to get a dog, I'd also like to suggest that you consider getting a rescue dog instead of a breeder dog.

Now, if your office allows you to bring the dog with you
QuoteIf you do decide to get a dog, I'd also like to suggest that you consider getting a rescue dog instead of a breeder dog.
Agree.  Cheaper and far, far less likely to have a ton of inbreeding-related health problems.  If you insist on getting a purebred dog, it WILL be inbred.

A buddy of my wife's, who owns a rather large house, used to own as pets a colony of gerbils. They had the second floor.

Eventually, he imported a Thai wife, and the gerbils vanished.

Did she eat them?

Better yet, shot them out her pussy.

I would like to avoid getting a breeder dog. I'd prefer a fabulously gay dog instead.
