Starting a thread because I got tired of talking about it in the "What are you playing" thread.
This game is quite brilliant when you actually get a good team going. I just played about 30 minutes of TE_Grain Elevator (30v30) on the Axis side (The Germans are the attackers and I like to play the attacking side) with a solid team of players. Instead of camping along the gatehouse and getting pinned down outside Point B like people were when the map was first patched into the game most of the Germans actually advanced from cover to cover and through smoke screens into the Grain Elevator and started taking the building floor by floor in a very chaotic fashion. Thankfully the Russkie snipers didn't seem to be very good. There is some visceral satisfaction in using a bolt-action in this game... every kill feels like it's earned and that it wasn't just a fluke. In all, one of the better and just plain more fun games I've had.
Until the game crashed. :P
heard there's a zoom these days for even bolt action rifles when iron-sighting. gone are the days of pixel hunting :(

Yeah that's true. And if you hold shift you zoom in a little more and hold your breath to steady your aim.

WHY ARE YOU ALL RUNNING INTO MACHINE GUN FIRE? ..but when you jumped in the tiger, and had a reliable gunner/driver, you could make those gaddam T34 and IS2 pay. not like it mattered, because 9/10 of the time you still ran out of reinforcements with five minutes still left on the clock
K98 master race reporting in. Semiautomatics are for damnyankees and time travellers.
As it is, there are too many semiautomatics and submachine guns- they frequently make up over half a team's composition on "realism" mode. After the beta custom servers will get that in line, but the game should do so of its own accord.
All of my hopes in this and other areas are really reserved for Rising Storm, the pacific mod/expansion hybrid. Worryingly, however, they have confirmed it will not be possible to choose to spawn with a floppy IJA field cap, and that some faces will not have such. This is the game's greatest drawback, and why Rising Storm is less anticipated than Katawa Shoujo.
I'm gonna thoroughly enjoy bayoneting you, Lettuce.

I may be induced into re-enacting my Battlefield Vietnam antics. :menace:

Good luck with it, CdM. I really respect your efforts to buck the trend- typically elderly can't into FPS at all.

-RO1 players will now get automatic bayonet upgrades for the Kar98 and Mosin rifle without needing to level these weapons first.

-Added the ability to override the automatically calculated Steam query port. Use SteamPort= on your commandline. Note: Has not been heavily tested, use at your own risk
-Fixed an issue with AI swapping positions while a player was dead and waiting to take over positions in a tank. This made it appear that some positions were "coming back to life"
-Fixed some vehicle AI bugs
-Fixed not being able to kill the hull MGer or tank gunner in the Panzer IV if they were a human player
-Created an intelligent system to grab bullet from partial clips before moving on to whole clips. This prevents you from ending up with all of your clips having just a few rounds missing.

-Refined speedhack detection to have less false positives
:w00t: And I just got my new computer too.
Still think I'm going to wait a couple patches.
So should I get this?
It's fun. *shrug*
Screenshots with Germans running around with StG 44's. Do I really want a game designed by Tim? :hmm:
Edit: OK maybe I spoke in haste. I am glad.
In the first game, there was always a strong limit on how many people could be carting around StG-44s assuming the map even had any at all.

Turned out they were carrying MKb42 in the screenshots, AFAICU. Which may or may not be unrealistic but at least it's not dino-cavalry stupid.
Worse than that is how prevalent semiautomatics are, and how rare bolt-action rifles can be. It isn't odd to find less than a third of the team using them.
Fortunately, wounds opened by the K98 cannot be staunched. The deformed soviet untermensch have trouble working the bolt of a nagant with their flipper-hands and so all wield the SVT-40, but this does not save them from the righteous justice of the wunderbolt.
:D
Seriously, 'flipper-hands' was the funniest thing I've read all day.
I bought the game.

No kidding; weapons availability was built upon squad breakdown, and that's the way it should be. May he with the fastest connection get the sniper rifle.

I finally don't suck spectacularly anymore; though I can't do the Hardcore Realism servers, just not much fun at this point. I was actually able to contribute to a hard but failed defense of Spartanovka as a Russian. I killed 8 other people , 6 in one life. I think that doubles my total kills in one night.

I still suck, no doubt about that; I neglected to mention earlier that on a previous server I TKed a comrade because he was walking through smoke and I mistook him for a kraut. This was after I died like 8 times in a row without firing a shot.

 There is no doubt I have been shot more times than I have fired my weapon and I have quite a few TKs to my name. My favorite was one of my best shots, I head shot a teammate and friend from over 100m away. Another buddy of mine evened things up when almost immediately after he shot me in the nuts as I came up a staircase right behind him.
I did hit a prone enemy German from over 110m away tonight. :showoff:
Oh dear. Half the team wields Mkb42s now- the game took a turn for the Nazi Tech Knights.
I tried to dispense the Reich's justice by bayonetting anyone found using this dark technology, but I found that trying to disarm the assault rifle enthusiasts has diminishing returns.
I think i'll hold off for the Rising Storm mod until I can find a server with reasonable restrictions. In the meantime I will post on RO2 forums requesting germans get night vision, jetpacks, and that weaselly little attachment that lets your gun fire around corners.
Been playing as a Russian MGer. You can really fuck shit up given a decent position. Not as fun as assaulting a German objective with a bayonet and rifle, but it breaks the monotony.

Patches are coming almost daily.
I haven't had any issues with running the game, and the occasional bugs I've encountered have been minor and infrequent. There's a lot of bitching on forums, though. I still have fun with it, though I'd say you're better off waiting six months or for a Steam sale.

Over 3 gig on the patch.
The game's 50% off on Steam right now.

Worth getting?
Most of the bugs have been worked out though there are still a few people having problems, considering your past history you probably will have some sort of game breaking problem. The biggest complaints left are design choices that are not likely to be changed by the devs, but hopefully by some modders, and a lack of players.
The game is rather fast paced for a RO game, which used to pride themselves on tactical, slower paced gameplay. Almost all of the stock maps (10 I think) are designed around urban close quarters combat, which heavily favors the unhistoric and unrealistic number of auto and semi auto weapons in the game. There have been 2 user made maps that have come out recently, that are much more wide open, but they are still works in progress because the SDK is not released to the public and Tripwire still has some bugs to work out to support custom content.
I enjoy the game for what it is but do find it a bit irritating to be constantly killed by weapons that have no business being in a "realistic" Stalingrad based game, though as this is the biggest complaint someone will end up fixing that soon enough.
