Title: Neuroscientists say brains of Apple fanatics the same as religious fanatics

We need to get one of those cult deprogramers on Beeb, stat!

QuoteDon't call them fanboys now, call them acolytes
Why are they so loyal to brand? Scientists say it affects their brain same as religion

The cult of Apple is real, according to neuroscientists.

They compared MRIs of Apple fans' brains to those of people who call themselves "very religious" and found that Apple and religion light up the same part of the brain. This means that Apple triggers the same feelings and reactions in people as religion.

The BBC highlights the finding in an upcoming documentary, "Secrets of Superbrands."

The documentary also likens Apple Stores to cathedrals. "Apple stores often feature stone or other types of austere, simple flooring like a church with products mounted on pedestals like individual altars," writes Inc's Renee Oricchio.

Apple store launches are like religious experiences too. "The scenes I witnessed at the opening of the new Apple store in London's Covent Garden were more like an evangelical prayer meeting than a chance to buy a phone or a laptop," writes Alex Riley and Adam Boome of the BBC.

"Inside the store, glassy-eyed staff were whipped up into a frenzy of excitement, jumping up and down, clapping and shouting. When the doors finally opened, they hysterically 'high-fived' and cheered hundreds of delirious customers flooding in through the doors for hours on end."

It seems Steve Jobs really is a God to some people.

Unsurprising. People need religion even if they won't admit it to themselves.

Cult of Diversity or Cult of Apple, it matters not.

Yes and no. I am not surprised that people who attending live store openings are crazy, in the same way as people who attend live game releases or royal weddings. But the article seems to draw conclusions about Apple users based on the actions of these fanatics, which is silly.

Crazy? Those parts of the brain that it activates are there for a reason. What's crazy is not to use them, and what's really crazy is that stupid old religions and Apple is the best we can come up with to do so.

Actually, the conclusions about Apple users are based on brain studies.  Sorry that this hits so close to home, but it does explain your antipathy for other, non-Apple, religions.  The most devout are often the least tolerant.

Of course - the point isn't that Apple fanatics are unique. There is nothing "special" about Apple fundies. The point is just that fundyism, while typically religious in nature, is not actually a fundamentally religious phenomenon.

It is of no great surprise that the Apple fanbois are irrational about their allegiance in a very similar fashion to how religious fanatics are irrational.

I left this alone at first, but since the thread keeps getting posts...

what a load of horseshit!  The source is not some academic journal (now that would be interesting), but is a BBC documentary called "Secrets of Superbrands".  Their "proof" is comparing MRIs - okay interesting, but we know little or what MRIs actually are showing us.  So brains of people who identify as religious are similar in some respect to people who identify as being Apple fans.  The why ro how however is completely unknown.

Then the rest of the article is where the real crap starts flowing.  They go from the vaguely scientific MRIs to one journalist comparing an Apple store to a cathedral, and another journalist comparing the opening of an apple store to a revivalist prayer meeting.  Nothing scientific here - just a story looking for some self-confirming quotes.

It is interesting how the Apple fanatic gets all frothing and incoherent when his brand is perceived to be under some kind of "attack", even when said attack is strictly observational in nature.

BTW I might add, the best (and the most honest) argument for religion I've heard is that if you don't believe in religion, that doesn't mean you believe in nothing, it means you believe in everything. There is some sense to that, but this is the great fear that strangles the process of progress, and it is, actually, an argument against the dialectical process which is what religion should be and actually is to be found at the core of those religions that are capable of evolving (I could quote amply from hinduism and buddhism for example). The dialectical metaphysical process of filling the void left by god is still in its infancy and has some similarity between the dialectical process between man and physics we call science. So in the so-called soft sciences, to take an example, we have some people on the left saying there is no human nature, and some people on the right saying all humans are are nature. This is not different from when one greek said all is water and another said all is fire; one greek said all is flux and another greek said all is stationary. Very silly propositions, perhaps not expected to be taken literally even by themselves, but it started a process of dialectics that gave rise to science, and, unfortunately, christianity, which proceeded to retard both the internal metaphysical dialectical process as well as the process of dialectics between metaphysics and physics. The mistake often made, especially by people of the right who are afraid of the new, is to not understand and take this process too literally or not seeing it in a larger perspective. If a thesis is obviously incorrect the helpful thing to do is to position an antithesis, which, even if it's wrong, will help progress along, not to throw away the whole process.

Soft sciences are crap. They don't have to be, but they are.

So do something about it.

BTW I might add, the best (and the most honest) argument for religion I've heard is that if you don't believe in religion, that doesn't mean you believe in nothing, it means you believe in everything. There is some sense to that...
You may believe that, but I don't.

It is actually one of the most dishonest arguments for religion I have ever heard; the old "if you don't think A, you must think B (which is worse)".

There is some sense to that, of the "non" variety.

P.S.  Thanks to grumbler for parsing that wall of text.

Not to mention that even if it were a valid argument, it fails at answering the question of which religion one should believe anyway!

If I understand the argument correctly, if you don't believe in (e.g.) Catholicism, you believe in everything (including, e.g., Catholicism).  Kinda wacky, but that's religion for you!

You don't understand it correctly, they mean that it makes it possible to believe in everything no matter how silly, i.e. stuff like the excesses of the '68 left.

By Internet standards that's Great Wall of China, and it's 15 lines on my work screen.  Anything with paragraphs over 3-4 lines is so annoying to read that I'm not going to bother, unless it's written by Minsky or equivalent.  You're not quite in his class, sorry. :console:

If I was popular here I'd be doing something wrong. Sorry for writing posts with strange alien concepts that take more than a few words to express btw.

More than a few words is OK.  Hell, I've seen books where so many words were used that several pages were required to fit them all.

It's just common courtesy to break up the words in paragraphs to make it easier on the reader, just like it's common courtesy to use proper grammar or punctuation.  You don't have to do that, but then fewer people would go to the trouble of actually reading what you have to say.  I assume you want people to read what you have to say, or you wouldn't be writing it, so not having people reading your posts would be an undesirable result.

Sounds more silly than "honest," tbh.  The '68 left?  Old news, and not particularly excessive.  The '89 Beijing left was more into excesses, and the '75 and '76 Cambodian Left is the gold standard for excesses.

But then, it is only you finding it honest.  Probably best not to bet the ranch on you being right for a change.  :P

I'll try to think about breaking them up a bit more, splitting up in paragraphs is something that comes naturally to me when I change to another thought or concept and when I write something in one go and it's all the same thought it can easily get like that.

I meant it honest, like, at least they're admitting some real and somewhat valid reasons - of course it's dishonest taken as a whole.
