Title: Are You 'Published' ?
Post by: jamesww on May 14, 2011, 06:14:02 PM
Since we have a few literary types here and a fair few frustrated wannabe novelists, I'd like to posit these two questions:

Are you a published author ?

What do you regard as the benchmark/threshold for being 'published' ?

Me, you don't need to ask do you; I'm the guy who can't string a couple of sentences together.  :P

People I think who should pull their fingers out and become 'authors' include CdM, CCR, Sav etc.

You know I have an idea, if someone still has access to the old languish database, they should take all of their posts and vanity publish them as a 'book'; I think given the right hype/word of mouth/facebook/twitter bullshit, a one off like that could succeed ?

It would need copious footnotes to explain memes and contexts or other characters, but that might be half the charm.

As far as my personal writing, publication is not a concern.

Undergraduate slave labor dosen't count in my mind. I once wrote a poem when 12 that got aired on National Radio?

Plus, 2 years ago I translated a bunch of old Norwegian legal texts from the 13th century for my sister-in-laws Master thesis.

The be "published" is generally thought to mean one has been paid for one's work or had it accepted in an academic journal.  Self-publishing, publishing in a fan journal, and the like isn't really being "published."

I have been both published and blurbed.  :showoff:

I've got plenty of articles and some columns written for financial newspapers.

But never got around to write a book. I really should do it, though - it has been called to my attention that the lack of published works refects badly on my resumé.

It is also bad that I have a degree by a Portuguese University (U. Católica). When I'm at dinners abroad, all the others start speaking on how they went to Yale and Oxford, Cambridge, etc, and I say an University that, while the best in Portugal, is almost unknown abroad. My portuguese colleages help here, but it is simply *not enough* to offset the prestige hit I get on that area.

It is worse than that; before my second book hit the New York Times Bestseller List, I was concerned for my resume as well, but once you have a couple of best-sellers you realize you don't ever need to worry about a resume again.  So I'd get cracking if I were you.  Your local ambassador can be a big help.

It used to be that as a lawyer you wanted to be in a "reported decision".  However with the internet changing the way cases are reported that has become almost trivial, and I am in a few dozen reported decisions in Alberta and Yukon, many with no precedential value.

At age 10 or so I had a Mother's Day poem published in the local newspaper, but I'll take no particular credit for that either.

I was once quoted in the Globe and Mail, and I had a few appearances in the local Winnipeg evening news commenting on this, that and the other thing (someone had my name as a local Reform Party spokesperson, back before we had any MPs).

I did "streeters" for another local newspaper for many years - all but one uncredited.  I did a special full-page streeter asking about the newspaper redesign, which I asked and WAS given credit for.  Technically this isn't writing, as it's only quotes - but if you heard how people actually talk, you'd realize it takes a lot of writing to takes people thoughts and words to turn them into coherent sentences.

I've thought about writing for an academic journal.  But Canada isn't the US - law reviews are not particularly respected.  So I'm sure I could get published, but I'm not sure I'd care enough to.

I've had my byline on something like 75-ish published articles, though most of them were no more than 150-250 words. :D That being said, I've had a large spread feature article in the Chicago Tribune, several feature items in the Daily Herald and the Sun-Times, and I've ghost-written three books.

As an editor, I've been involved in three fiction books being published, numerous newspaper and magazine articles, and a number of grant proposals.

I have never published any of my fiction.

I write copy and articles, but I don't consider that being "published", even with a byline. Writing for newspapers and magazines isn't being published. Heck, in most cases, it isn't even journalism. Published is writing a book, the way I see it. And, a few years back, a friend and I were in fact accepted by publisher Gyldendal, only to be dealt the death blow by Sales & Marketing.

On the other hand, it's rewarding seeing ads and posters where I've done the creative work and the copy.  :)

I have the low self-esteem and the aura and odour of a failure, and as such any little boost to my ego is most welcome. Since I also have the stamina of a fruit fly to follow up on my own projects, I tend to view getting published as about as likely as winning the lottery.

Either because or despite that, I've never had any particular interest in writing.

My outpourings have been published in four magazines (consumer and B2B), two national newspapers and a couple of local ones, and some stuff that started out in minor publications were republished elsewhere. I'm most proud of writing four cover features.

Currently I write for two well-respected defence publications, but as they're mostly online (except a monthly wrap-up magazine and a separate e-mag) I guess none of that counts  :glare:

I often take my own photos too and have had quite a few of those published.

Bollocks to only books counting, pretty much every academic gets their research bound and sells 2 copies at £300 each. It's distribution that counts, baby.

Boris Johnson once said that you don't get any good until you've had 400 articles published. I surpassed that a good few years ago.

I author a chapter in a legal "how to" book whose audience is largely attorneys. My chapter is entitled "declaratory relief". Although it's useful information, it makes for crappy cocktail party talk. It's in its third edition with me as the author proving in fact that supply can create demand, or at least, a sense of need.
